Why would I want low-level 3d rendering baked into my browser?

I already loathe the overly interactive sites, especially when they're poorly organized for either PC or mobile viewing. Right now I see nothing that such 3d rendering being available on every website could offer me. I don't want sites to morph into some 3d maze that I have to navigate to find what I want and I don't want to play games that require such 3d rendering (eg:Unreal engine games) through my browser.

If I were using some sort of specialized application that could use it then I'd expect to install a plugin.

WebGL wasn't designed with web sites in mind, it was designed for web APPLICATIONS.

What do you think Google is trying to achieve with Chrome OS?

What do you think all of the new HTML5 APIs are for? (eg. Offline storage, web sockets, web workers [JavaScript multithreading], File API, external hardware API, P2P networking, Video API, Audio API)

HTML5 is being developed cooperatively between almost every single software company in the world as the '' open platform of the future. Basically, you write one application in HTML5/JavaScript, and that same application can be run on every platform and OS without requiring custom native code or even needing to be recompiled. And it's already well on it's way, even though many of you may not even realize. Over half of the apps in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store are actually web applications wrapped in native browser wrappers. This is why many apps are identical between iOS and Android, because they're actually running the exact same JavaScript source code (check out PhoneGap for more info on this). Windows 8 actually adopted HTML5/JavaScript as a native programming language to the complete and pleasant surprise of every Windows developer ever. And in fact, probably 80% of apps in the Windows Store are HTML5/JavaScript, including most of the built in applications like Xbox Music and even the Windows Store application itself.

Platform independence and standards simplification are two big ones. It is also easier to maintain and update.

And why do they want this?

What will websites do besides create more worthless gimmicks like Flash based sites?

I'm not a web designer: I'm a guy who goes to web sites. I'm the customer. When the producer wants something that the customer doesn't want, especially when they want to get it by forcing it on the customer, no good comes of it. Especially when we'll all incur a credible security threat by having this garbage on our browsers.

Does anyone out there who is not a web designer wish any & every website to be able to bombard you with low-level 3d graphics at will, complicating your searches for info, your purchases and causing your device to use more power than it has any right to in order to display a mere web page?

The graphics will also look horrendous unless the viewing device has capable hardware. There shouldn't be a GPU requirement to surf the internet, but with this there would be.

The web is driven by advertising dollars.

Guess what 3d ads will give them?

You really are a piece of work.
1) "If you don't want it then no one does"... worst argument ever.
2) Every time someone adds something on, someone will find a way of taking it off. I bet that Mozilla gives the option of turning off WebGL if you want.
3) As for security holes: How is this any different than Java plug-in, Flash plug-in, google sandbox fiasco. Point and case: The internet is a risk; if you don't like it, then GET OFF!
4) I have computers that are over 5 years old that support OpenGL 2.0.
5) If you're viewing this website WITHOUT a GPU, then you've got one amazing computer.
