Microsoft Enthusiast Runs Windows 7 on a Pentium II System
Microsoft must surely be hoping to raise the bar higher with its Windows 7 OS. However, a hacker is more interested in figuring out the lowest depths Windows 7 can plunge to. Whatever you believe you know about the bare minimum specs required to run Windows 7 may actually be exaggerated, greatly exaggerated. A hacker on the Windows Club’s forum, who is only known by his cyber pseudonym hackerman1, has done the unthinkable by successfully installing and running Windows 7 on a Pentium II system. The rig boasts a primeval 266 MHz Pentium II processor, 96 MB of SDRAM memory and a 4 MB graphics card. Hackerman1 now wants to repeat the feat using a 166 MHz Pentium I processor and 1 MB video card.

Any decent computer chumps can run Win7 on the latested and fastest hardware. It takes a pro (a patient one) to tweek it to run on older hardware! Congratulations and good luck with P1 quest!

When people say they can run W7 on P3 or lesser procs, do they mean they can boot AND run apps?

i think Win7 boots in 15~20 minutes on a PIII and runs apps slowly
I have no idea about PII rigs though

Uh... Acctually, from pressing the power button to the login screen, it takes about 1 min. 30 sec. to 2 minutes. Then again I think it's because my video card is an ATI Radeon 9800 128MB.

This is interesting. I'm having trouble getting (nvidia/ trident/ ati ) drivers for a P4 system to run on Fedora 10 and a resolution beyond standard VESA. Is he having better luck?

Does that mean that my Pentium III should be able to run Windows 7 even though I only have 512MB of RAM?

... Surprised it didn't give a fraction of a score like a 0.3, or something.
it would be very funny if the 1.0 score ended up being a 4.0 or higher with the most minimal system he could muster up. i hope Microsoft changes their box info and look at something like this, and change their minimum requirements list to reflect this newfound amazement.

Doesn't supprise me.
7 is a break from tradition of forcing better hardwear since its also aimed at netbook...which is like a Pentium 0.5
