Microsoft Donating 8 Meals For Each IE 8 Download

comment Commentsprint Printemail EmailDeliciousDiggStumbleUponRedditFacebookSlashdot

Call it a gimmick, call it what you want, but it looks like Microsoft is doing some good by helping out those in need via their Internet Explorer 8 advertising.

Along side their Dean Cain commercials that went live earlier this month, they’ll be donating the equivalent of eight meals to the Feeding America Network for each completed download of Internet Explorer 8.

Make sure that you download soon though; this promotion will only run from June 10th to August 8th. So, if you’re not downloading IE8 for yourself, download it for those in need! You’ll feel better tonight knowing you did.

avatarMicrosoft is monstrously

Microsoft is monstrously rich, I'm sure they are able to donate those in needs even without having us to download this FREE product (if they want to). I certainly smell something fishy about this since ms doesnt gain any money at all from this download.

avatarLet me preface by saying

Let me preface by saying this is a noble idea, and especially in today's economy, Microsoft should be applauded.

Now that that's out of the way...

My mom called about a week ago...automatic updates installed IE8 on her machine. All she could complain about is constant crashing of IE. I figured, "this is my mom, she's a drama queen-mother, blah-blah-blah, can't be THIS bad...".

I built a media machine for my garage two days ago, and decided to just grep everything from Windows Update, including IE8. After 20 minutes of use, IE crashed...hard. Then it crashed hard again 15 minutes later.

I had to use the beta nine or ten months ago for testing, and don't recall a single hard crash. Not sure what happened between then and now, but IE8 won't be installed on my primary machine. Maybe it will survive when using compatibility mode, but I'm not going to spend my time finding out.

avatarGreedy ISP = no food for joo

My ISP limits my monthly downloads and if I exceed that, I have to pay.

Sorry, hungry people, but greedy ISP's want you to get scurvy.

Just don't criminalize Microsoft for what they're doing. Even if I do feel that I'm being exploited, I'd still download IE8 if it means another day's meal for some. web tasarım - web tasarım - seo - web dizayn - web tasarım

avatarAm I the only one tired of "charity for ransom"?

Every company that wants to take a pedantic route to being benevolent seems to prefer to take a legitimately good charity or potential donation as a hostage only to be set free with your depositing a predetermined allotment of small, nonsequential, currency of appropriate denomination into their coffers, at which point they will THEN decide to ever so generously give a pathetically small portion of the proceeds to a worthy cause.

I applaud companies that donate to charity mind you, but only those that GIVE to the charity without having to put their customers on a guilt trip a yenta with a 35 year old single son living in her basement would be envious of!

The ones that sicken me the most are those that effectively shill their wares at the expense of helping causes like the feeding of those without, be they domestic or foreign, sending money as a relief effort for devistated areas, and even things like donations to cancer research and the like. Oh sure, they "want to help", but only after you do this... Direct contributions are of course infinitely more benefical and far less of an illusion to the consumer believing they get what they want AND save the world.

Don't ransom generosity, one piece at a time, in the empty attempt to profit off the genuinely decent charity. If a donation is to be made, make it, and say that you have donatED so as to set an example, past tense of donate mind you, not that you -will- donate if enough ransom is paid in the alotted time...

Microsoft already has profit projections drawn up for Windows # Here, Internet Explorer Eleventeen, and Office +1 more than last time, they can afford to make a charitable WITHOUT saying they will donate based upon adoption of anything. Either way it's going to be a tax write-off, so why not at least be philanthropic about it and pretend to not be holding a donation of food to those in need in exchange for people to adopt your product.

avatarSadly, no

Sadly, you're not the only one. If Google starts donating a grain of rice for every search made, you gonna stop using it? I don't care if the only reason I felt compelled to use Google is out of guilt. I salute Google for being one of the few companies known for giving without strings attached. But I'm also pretty sure companies like Apple and Microsoft make donations to their communities. You don't hear about it because they don't brag about it.

avatarNo doubt, and I do agree

No doubt, and I do agree that MS, Google, and many others do indeed give charitably to numerous causes and without a single photo taken. I mainly take exception to effectively turning benevolence into a photo op and advertising campaign for themselves rather than making the cause the center of attention.

Frankly I'd think a better way to do it is to come out and say they are going to donate X amount of stuff to Y cause, and if you lend support to Y cause -through- Internet Explorer 8, then they will match that donation up to Z amount. That shows that they are going to give either way, the charity organization gets additional focus in the effort rather than a passing nod, and Microsoft would still get their plug, upswing in response, and they would look that much more charitable for it... But I guess that's just me :D

avatarDoesn't Bill Gates give out

Doesn't Bill Gates give out millions in charity anyway? I'm sure Microsoft/Bill already had a set amount they were going to donate anyway. This is just a way to shoot up the numbers to "stay on top" but who cares. People IN AMERICA are going to have a little more food that would otherwise go without.

Giving people food is stupid. I would rather teach someone to farm so they would have food for life than to give someone free meals.

I will download the installer everyday until this expires.  And can we keep the ignorant comments about LOLIE8SUXXORZ out of here please?  You don't have to fucking install it you whiny bitches.

That's my plan at least.  Should work AND I don't have to use IE8.  Win-win.

feeding people that need to be fed, yes that is very very important.  But exploiting them?  Is MS just using this to get people to download their mediocre browser? IE7 IMO is much much better then IE8.

avatarGrow up...

Uh right, I'm sure the hungry will be mad at being "exploited" when told that the food they received was from users duped by Microsoft into downloading IE8. So what if this bloats the total downloads for IE8? As Andy mentioned, it's a gimmick after all. If it's product bashing, sure, but when it's feeding the hungry, we could use less comments like yours. Even worse are those who do so without having donated to charity before.

avatarWhat makes you think I have

What makes you think I have not donated?  I have donated a lot of money.  I like giving back,  I brought up a point, is Microsoft really being nice or or they exploiting a need in society just for them to make more money?  You need to grow up because your comment was childish and immature.  If i am going to do something to help people I want it to be legit and for the right reasons.  Not for just some company to boost its revenue.

avatarLet me put it this way: the

Let me put it this way: the hungry don't care what you think of Microsoft's business practices. You're implying that what MS is doing is not right? If more companies did what MS is doing, we'd have a lot less hungry people in the word, mind you. If you have a better idea to feed them you go do what you have to do. Just don't criminalize Microsoft for what they're doing. Even if I do feel that I'm being exploited, I'd still download IE8 if it means another day's meal for some. My biggest gripe? Even if you're entitled to your own opinion, why be a naysayer in this case when it involves the less fortunate?

avatarI am not naysaying anything,

I am not naysaying anything, I am not stating that they are doing this just for money.  I brought up a point are they really doing this to be nice or just for money.  How hard is that to understand.  I am not stating anything I am just bringing up a question.  Even if MS is doing it for there own good its still good that other people get a meal.  But its immorral for MS IF there only reason for doing this is for money.  Do you understand now?

avatarI won't debate English with

I won't debate English with you. If you contend that you weren't naysaying but merely posing a question, I'll give you that. Now let me ask you this: just what were you hoping to achieve by posing that question? Was it simply for the fun of it? You're probably thinking that it's innocent enough that no harm can be done, right? It's not you I'm concerned about, rather the MaximumPC blog reader who might buy into your whole idea that what Microsoft is doing is immoral after reading your irresponsible post and decides that he shouldn't support such a cause. But that won't be a problem, now will it, since your next donation will more than make up for those 8 meals lost. Heck, I'm sure your donations have a more profound impact than what a multi-billion company can ever hope to achieve. So unless you're going to tell me I'm spot on, my point to you is that you keep questions like these that bring no value whatsoever to the table to yourself, freedom-of-speech and all considered, cause you're effectively robbing, or God forbid, killing some poor soul here in the U.S.. Sound too far fetched to you? Possibly. But why take chances when the stakes are so high? Do you understand now?

avatarwhy are you attacking me?

why are you attacking me?  What is the point of comments on articles if I am not allowed to bring up a point.  You are getting way to defensive over this.  I have the right to bring up concerns and have the right to know if things that I donate or do things for companies, so they can donate work.  WOW, I NEVER SAID MS WAS BEING IMMORAL.  You are not reading and comprehending my statements.  I am not stating a fact about them I am bringing up questions and concerns, when was that a bad thing?  Your counter-arguments are being very childish and you are the one being irresponsible not me.  I am in no way killing anybody, you are going to some stupid extreme that has nothing to do with this article.  You seem to be living in some la-la land.  You are the one that can make a Maximumpc blog reader turn away from here because of what your saying.

avatarStill, at least MS is doing

Still, at least MS is doing something for the greater good by donating food. When was the last time, lets say APPLE donated and gave to charity?? The answer is, NEVER! That's right. Mr. Steave Jobs is so damn greedy, he didn't even want to give the people that helped him build and create the apple one any company stock or money when apple first took off and started making millions. GREEDY SOB.
