You'd think pilots would learn after John Denver's nose dive that kit planes just suck. Sorry, but if I'm going to travel thousands of feet in the air at hundreds of miles per hour, it's going to be in something that was professionally manufactured, and has had the sh*t flight tested out of it before it was ever put on sale.

Homebuilt planes are not to blame, most of the time they are built better than commercially manufactured planes. John Denver crashed because he was not familiar with his plane. He ran out of fuel because his fuel tank selector switch was in the wrong position.

Asked in a June 2006 USA Today interview to discuss his views on risk-taking, he offered this response: “The older you get, the more risk you should take. When George Bush Sr. went skydiving at 80, they made a big deal. What if his parachute didn't open? So what? It’s not like the guy hasn’t done anything with his life. Kids who are 18 think they will live forever and take huge risk. They have their entire lives ahead of them. If I were to die tomorrow, I have no complaints. I’ve experienced more than anybody should expect in a lifetime.” from AOPA.org

Sure are an awful lot of people that "perish" in these small, non commercial planes.

To hell with snipers, marksman or military bravado. Let's just gift our enemies with shitty personal aircraft.

Living in Boise, this was a big deal. This guy made a huge impact on this community. Micron is a giant in the semiconductor area.

Anybody else think this guy looks eerily like Christopher Meloni from Law & Order: SVU? If they ever made a biopic on this guy Christopher would definitely be the guy to play him.

This is one of the most impressive feats of self betterment I've ever seen. So long Steve, you will be missed.

He sounds like he was a total badass. He probably crashed when swerving away from hitting a squirrel on the runway, on a mission to deliver medicine to orphans which was really a cover for his single-handed infiltration of a terrorist base.

May you always find fair skys and a bright horizon, Steve.

A testament to the American way, going from factory worker to CEO. He's earned a rest.

Rest in Peace, Steve Appleton.
