Still waiting for a Android app you guys... I can't believe you would develop an app for a operating system that no one likes. Are you Microsoft's pocket?

This app no longer works but still took my money

No commenting available (or being able to read the ones there) on the app. That's makes it no go for me... Don't feel bad, I don't use Metro at all anyways.

App crashes to desktop on occasion and most long articles are cut-off (see the recent How-To on building your own C64x). Also, pinning to the left side only shows headlines that aren't clickable. (I pinned it so I could have the "Windows 8 Tips" article visible while entering the Start Screen registry edit).

Overall-- This app gets a 3/10. Not Kick-Ass quality.

Here's the URL for the MPC Windows 8 app, Jimmy, in case you wanna update the article:

Hey Guys, Thanks a ton for this! I'm sure it was an effort to say the least.

I will certainly install it (I'm in need of some good win 8 apps). Unfortunately I'm not sure how good it will be for me. I only have Windows 8 on my home desktop, and by the time the day is through and I'm home, I've already read all the jucy stuff on the website.

Still, it is appreciated, and I'll enjoy seeing MaxPC on my wall of modern squares.

I don't see any point in using Metro apps.

It's much better to go straight into the desktop, open a proper browser and go to the website.

This new fad whereby designers hide the UI functions and provide less information is crazy. Metro apps are a great example of this insane trend, but there are others:

1. The mobile version of PC magazine doesn't bother to note who wrote any particular article in its main list of articles. Therefore, even on my iphone I still go through hoops to make sure I avoid their buggy mobile site as far as possible.

2. Itunes 11 not only hides the invaluable sidebar by default, it makes you turn it on again each time you open the program.

EDIT: Ooops, I downloaded the OTHER "Maximum PC Magazine" app instead of "Maximum PC Online"
This new app is WAY better. Sorry for the mix-up, but I'm gonna leave the rest of this comment here, just know what it refers to the Maximum PC Magazine app instead. Sorry guys, maybe you can fix up that app though.

After you zoom in, you cannot scroll with the mouse, neither by scrolling the wheel nor dragging the picture. Using the arrow keys on the keyboard change the page, which is good, but still not useful when zoomed in. All of this forces me to move the mouse to both scroll bars an awful lot just to read one page, let alone an entire article. I'm not sure if this seems to be an inherent problem of Windows 8 apps in general or if they are just things that were overlooked. Either way, Microsoft says Windows 8 works great with keyboard/mouse as well as touch. So far, I'm not impressed.
While I'm sure this works much better on a touch screen, this seems horrible for a normal PC.
Other than that, I like the app. It's very clean and easy to navigate.

I would love to.. but i disabled Metro so none of the apps will load and for that matter, I dont want them to load. Actually sped up the system a bit. Go figure.

Pretty decent app, thanks and good job!

Wait, so is there any reason for me to purchase a subscription in the MaximumPC magazine reading app for Windows 8 any more? I was planning to do so when I got my Surface Pro tablet this weekend.

(Besides "Supporting the Magazine")

The Maximum PC Online app will feature content from the website. Think of it as a pretty and tailor-made MaximumPC.com RSS feed optimized for Windows 8.

awesome! now all we need is an android app

avatar

DoctorX

This... i cannot freaking believe they left out android. ipad... check, win8 metro... check, android... uh.. what is that?

Please fix the stretched-out, low-res images!! Also, being able to see and/or comment on stories as we can on the web interface would be cool but I'm guessing you already considered that and it won't work/too hard/ or wanted to KISS.

avatar

jimmthang

Yes, we're trying to resolve the low-res issue moving forward by using higher res images. They'll look fine on the website but when the app blows them up, they looks low-res. :(

And yea, no comments on the app unfortuantely. We're keeping it simple with this one for now.

You forgot the window that tells us about my friend's mom who makes over $4000 per month in her spare time using a laptop.

People are going to hate because it's for Windows 8 but I really like the layout. Really nice looking front-end.

New app funded by MS?

avatar

jimmthang

New app = yes

Funded by Microsoft = no

Why can't you build a better website instead of making apps? Not only would it be more accessible to people, the web is also cross platform.

avatar

daardvark

A truly compelling reason to switch to Windows 8!

avatar

limitbreaker

Ah that's great, a windows 8 app is welcomed and I'll check it out when i get home but i have to say, i mostly visit maximumpc when not at home through my Android phone which begs the question; why don't we have an Android app? It would be much more useful than a windows version. If you're on the windows 8 app, you're probably on a tablet, desktop/laptop and using a chunky Web browser is okay.

Not an 8 user, but thanks for your hard work.
