Mac Users Are Whiny Losers. Love, Maximum PC

We don't like taking on the role of enforcer, nor do we like bullying those ill equipped to defend themselves. But sometimes, for the greater good of all involved, as PC users we feel obligated to step in and lay the smack down when our Mac brethren come asking for it. In a way, we feel like Billy Madison did when he told a bunch of first graders "Now you're all in big, big trouble" before proceeding to pummel them in dodgeball.
Well, Mac users have come asking for it, courtesy of our friends over at MacLife (Maximum PC's sister magazine) who this week posted 25 Reasons Why Non-Mac Users Should Shut Their Damn Pie-Holes. To borrow from Billy Madison, now you're in big, big trouble. Here are our retorts:
1. Justin Long is a dick - There are only two people who are fans of Justin Long, his agent and his mother. And to be perfectly honest, we're not even sure about the latter.
2. Shinier = better - Just because your computer is shiny and aluminum doesn't mean it's better. We'll take a Lenovo X300 over a MacBook Air any day.
3. We don't want to be Steve Jobs' bitch - You guys constantly get reamed by the House of Jobs, whether it's the incessant train of forced hardware upgrades, lightning fast price cuts, or the industry standard features that Apple supports with proprietary implementations, Mac users get hit where it hurts most--the wallet.
4. OS X is awesome - It's not nice to pick on disadvantaged folks (it's the reason why we seldom pick on Mac users). We all know that OS X is awesome, but we defend Vista even though it sucks because it's what we're stuck with. Just because you've got something that's better, doesn't mean you need to get all Justin Long about it.
5. Team Fortress 2 kicks ass - We believe you when you say you have more important things to do than play games. Like sitting in Starbucks dressed in stonewashed jeans wishing you could play games. But hey, Oregon Trail still rocks, right?
6. Elmo had a line, too - We can't dispute that hundreds waited in line for the Mac OS X Leopard release, just as many also clamored for the Tickle Me Elmo doll when it first came out. But we're still not trading in our cooler toys to get one.
7. We have Newegg - Intel P45 motherboard: $99. Core 2 Duo E8400: $170. 2GB DDR3-1333 RAM: $80. Not having to throw away your PC and buy a brand new one when it comes time to upgrade: Priceless.
8. Secure in our insecurity - You love to tout the lack of viruses targeted towards Macs as an indication that Macs are more secure, but could it be that even hackers don't give a f*** about Mac users? In a way, it'd be like invading Iceland. It's not that it can't be done, but what's the point?
9. Mighty Mouse - Like all things Mac, the Mighty Mouse is cute. And also mighty lame compared to the Logitech G5 PC users have been computing with for the past 24 months. But then again, what would a Mac user do with all those buttons?
10. Who compiles 25 reasons of why Macs don't suck? - Mac users do. And while we'd love to spend time coming up with 25 retorts, we have better things to do. Like play games, run executables, overclock, watch NBC Olympics On The Go, and not overpay for under powered hardware.

MacLife article IS WHINY!
Submitted by DDTechGuy on Thu, 2008-10-09 10:28
I just finished reading the dribble that your sister mag, MacLife, published as referenced in your article and 'whiny' doesn't begin to describe that waste of electronic verbage.
Not only was their list of 25 reasons (less really, since many were rewrites or sub complaints of the original reason above it) mainly subjective (IE: opinion, judgement, assumption, etc.) there wasn't a single compelling reason to switch to Mac (except that it might make one FEEL better); whereas MaxPC's article is almost completely objective (IE: observable, factual, able to be counted, etc) and offers substantial arguments in which PC users benefit over Mac users.
I don't need to FEEL better about my using a PC for most of my daily work or play time...I EXPERIENCE a richer enviroment; one in which I have the abiltiy to choose what I want to do, alter my outcome based on things that are important to me; when I want to change/do something "outside the box," both figuratively and physically, I have the freedom and ability to do so.
Oh, and the argument that there aren't "eight year old pc's" running today, as well as they ever were, is complete bunk. My personal PC is ten years old...granted, it doesn't have many of its original parts/OS in it, I'd put it up against any Mac today for both performance and total cost to maintain/upgrade...especially the illeged eight year old G4 mentioned in the article. (Poor jerk must hate waiting DAYS to render his edited videos with that old hag)
As for an objective, positive note for the iMac/Macbook Pro systems available today...thank the Maker that Apple dropped Motorola's chipset and adopted Intel's...Now that those systems are essentially PC's on the inside and using what is really just a repackaged and locked down Linux based OS, those systems can be useful in their niche of the world...Keeping the Apple Borg collective busy spending more time and money to get the latest in SHINEY stuff while us PC users take over the world! Bwahahahahhaahahhhaaa!

How to end this eternal battle!!
Submitted by laner399 on Wed, 2008-09-03 12:23
All you'd have to do to end this Apples/Window$... and Linux(?) battle royale would me to hand out guns becuase all the Apples/Window$ users would shoot each other on sight while the Linux users would go to a secluded area to try to disasemble their weapon in order to figure out how to improve it! And WHY is this thread tagged LINUX, anyway?? Apples is DEAD to the Linux community, though we sometimes like to install a PPC Linux distro on a Mac, after thouroghly removing the original Mac OS! our main realm is the PC, and all other unlocked hardware, not especially Mac crap. Those that say we share a heritage with apples are wrong, that ended with the original closed source Unix, some kind of which apples aquired in it's early days. No kind of closed source Unix was made into Linux, the original kernel was a complete rewrite of a Unix kernel, released on a public license, compiled for PC's from a Minix OS running on a PC!! So please give the linux community some respect because we believe in adapting the OS to our own needs, istead of adapting to some big heads idea of an OS. By the way, don't try Linux, if you are waiting for a jobs or a bill to spell out how you will do your computing, you are not worthy!!
Linux = the Future NOW!!

Linux won't go anywhere in the mainstream until the command line is gone. The average pc or mac user doesn't have any idea how to use it and they don't want to learn the commands. They also don't want to go through so many steps to install driivers for newly released hardware.
To go mainsteam Linux will have to be dumbed down, and then it won't be any different than windows or osx at that point.
I use Ubuntu and Mandriva and I hate installing drivers for new hardware. Software installs are easy though.
so much negative input.....I have found use for both.

I used to be a PC only guy and recently purchased an iMac. I am very happy with my purchase and my transition to OS X has been quite perplexing. I won't lie when i say it really does dummify/simplify a lot of things that I have done so far. I seem to keep trying to use my Windows point of view and find that it is only simpler.
Anyhow, I can't help to say that my PC side will always be here, I still insist on attempting to build all my Externals vs buying the equivalent "Time Capsule" which is extemely overpriced, for what I beleive it does. I purchased my iMac Tax Free via the Military. Nonetheless, deep inside I know I really wanted to buy a crapload of parts from Newegg and build a beast with the same amount I spent for this Mac, even less! But I just didnt want to deal with my Primary household PC being something that can potentially get a bad driver thru updates and give me a blue screen of death along with a wife chirping annoyingly...."I have a conference to attend, a paper to write, an instructor to get a hold of, etc. etc."
I'm getting a couple raises in my near future and can definetly say I can't wait to build myself a PC, and may be one of the first inline for Windows 7 when it arrives, just for my new Rig. This wil be me and I like to say I enjoy both sides of the world.
I may not be saying this if I was an avid Gamer.....its appeals to me, but I just can't find the time to disconnect. Maybe when I retire.
OS X has been very friendly to me mostly. Just trying to find Mac equivalents for what I did with my Old PC that crashed has been the most challenging part. Nothing I havent been able to take on with a little patience.
Also as I have read just about everywhere, Office Mac 08 is one of the worst things people have installed on thier macs, but I cant say I feel the same. I have enjoyed it thus far. We'll see.....cuz everything I do on this mac I have been viewing thru my PC eyes and havebeen pleased overall to this moment.
Hope this desnt piss anybody off.

Lol Honestly, I like Mac, and I like Windwos. Both are great for what I use them for. I go to school with my MBP, get all my work done on that. Then I get home, and I play games on my PC (when I'm not with girlfriend) and do other PC stuff. Like buy new hardware when I can afford it lol. But yeah, both systems rock, and I wouldn't trrade em for anything. Plus that free iPod Touch from Apple got me $200!

Apple freaks! If you think Macs are the greatest thing since sliced bread, then knock yourself out! Why do you insist on trying to convince everyone else how great Macs are? Yourselves maybe? If I wanted a Mac, thought a Mac was great, then guess what folks? You got it....I've have a freakin' Mac. Leave us PC users alone. If a want to buy an easily upgradable computer with limitless options, then that's my choice. Mac users remind me of the kid in school who bragged about his new toy only to the only kid interested in it...while the rest of us played in the field.
One last thought...Macs are so great, they still have crap market share...swallow them apple seeds.

Apple is crap just like any other computer.
Im a technician that works on IBM, DELL, HP, and APPLE computers. I get just as many apple jobs as I do any for any of the other companies. All the components are made by the same people and its all junk.
But i have to say that most of the Apple owners are zealots. Its like they are brainwashed or something. One job really sticks in my mind. I replace a motherboard in this ladies MAC, and the moment I stepped into the house she was going on about how Apples are made in the USA for the USA and are compatable with EVERYTHING made in the USA. I had to listen to this crap for an hour and a half (MACs are harder to work on then PCs). The first thing I noticed when I got the case cracked open were the words "MADE IN MALAYSIA" stamped on the MB in big white leters.
After showing that to the customer, she insisted that the MAC must be a conterfit knockoff...go figure

let me start off by saying i love os x. it is the best, most enjoyable OS to use. i have a mac mini from when they first came out. i bought it with my tax return. i still use it to this day. i also have 2 pc's and a laptop. soon i will be buying another laptop.. and for my uses, a macbook pro is what i want. but i will get the gateway 7811 fx. why? because i don't want to pay double the price for a laptop that isn't quite as good.
if apple were to pull their heads out of each others asses and make prices competitive, i think apple would sell a lot more macs.. thus, more viruses for the mac.. as there will be a larger user base. i am not one to really worry about viruses anyway, i don't run anti-virus either. if something goes wrong, i format and start over again. it may seem tedious to some.. but i actually enjoy doing it.
it would be nice if apple either support it's OS on any machine, be it pc or mac, or in the next version after snow leapard (did they use "cheetah" yet?), make it able to run executables. then it will be a war. OS X is better than vista, i don't know about windows 7.. but unless microsoft learned from their mistakes, i'm sure OS X will be better than windows 7 as well.

As long as she's happy with it, I am happy with it; until something needs done to fix it. Then, I get to talk to the mentally challenged trogs at Apple support. "Support" is a word used loosely mind you... I've never seen a machine that is in need of such constant care and feeding. I thought that my mod'd pc's needed love and guidance, but they're low maintenance compared to our Mac. Gotta love the Mac sheep, they are the cute metrosexual beta's of the computing world.

Have to disagree with you there... I've rarely had an issue with my Mac. Most of the ones that I've had, were much like the PCs... just kill the task and move on.... on rare occassions, I had to reboot. I've definitely had more issues with my PCs over the years (and yes, they've all been upgraded, modded, you name it). Then again, why would I have many issues, when the hardware is locked in... and the upgrades where relegated to memory and HDD expansion. Still, I very much enjoy using my Mac... and use my PCs for gaming.

Linux is going on near 20 years and STILL(!!) hasn't gotten its act together! Linus Torvalds has been threatening to take over the OS world since 1992(!) and STILL(!) cannot get it up!
A couple of things disqualify me from Linux:
a) I don't live in a cellar, I don't have a beard, and I practice personal hygiene.
b) Not into writing my own drivers. Sorry!
c) Want to install software? Sure! Which VERSION of Linux are you running? Which kernel? Which desktop? My God this is like a freaking survey and all I wanted to do was install an application!
Hating on LINUX!! NOW WE'RE TALKING!!!

1. So do I - I still use linux.
2. Nobody writes their own drivers..... well.. since like 1990!
3. Ubuntu has the app manager, which is even easier than xp. You browse around, check a few apps and bam, their installed! I agree a couple applications you have to compile, but usually you don't need those anyway.
And so what if we don't have the $$ to have great mac vs pc -like advertisments?? I bet more people would use linux if they knew what it was.
And also, we're free and open source, hard to argue with that. And if you STILL are not opening up to the idea of it, great! We don't care, we don't stand to gain if you don't like our shit. So go around bashing it all you want for no stupid reason.
Thank you and have a nice day :) .

Vista vs XP vs Mac
Submitted by noccy on Sun, 2008-08-24 14:07
I don't understand all the cheering over Vista by the fanboys. I would without a doubt go for a Mac rather than a PC running Windows Vista. That being said, I prefer XP over both the previous. Vista is a complete failure as an operating system, and not exactly representative. If the comparison is done against Windows Vista, anything will beat it.
Want a powerful, stable and reliable Windows PC? Go for XP SP1, throw out that horrible .Net framework, ditch Microsoft Office (OpenOffice beats the crap out of M$ office), and use Firefox.
Vista is a failure.
I Respectfully Disagree.
Submitted by DaNoob on Mon, 2008-11-03 02:53
I would disagree with that. Vista isn't that bad, as long as you have a good computer to run it.
IMO, Vista came too early. If it came later, where quad cores, etc, became mainstream, it'll be way more stable, fast and people might even come to love it as they love XP.
Most Mac users are idiots!

While I have to agree that Apple uses top notch hardware (most of the time), too bad it's 6mos or more behind the PC mainstream. I can't stand the fact that they try and push everyone into converting. Many PC people that I know of are power users, and they already have an idea of what the Mac is, and can do... they'd much rather partition their Hard Drive and put on a copy of Ubuntu or whatever flavor of Linux they like...and play with it there. I did convert, and I'm happy with my Mac...but I'm not going to lie and say I like everything they do... or even alot of what they do. I use my machine, go to school, use it for pretty much everything (except gaming) that I did with my PC. Is the hardware superior, hell no... it's a base model PC with certain "minor" doo-dads and an OS written to those specs. If Microsoft restricted it's OS to certain hardware (and it controlled it all), would we have as many issues with it as we do now... definitely not. Mac snobs are funny that way.... they live by the Mac commercials and what the people at the "Genius" bar say and of course what Steve Jobs says... and that's about it.
I've gone to the Genius bar with my parents (as they've converted from the PC also, but don't understand how to use the computer in general), and I didn't want to teach them everything all over again... so I sit at this Genius bar, and he demonstrates basic usage (good stuff, happy that I didn't have to go over this stuff with them). So, we get to imported HD video and utilizing iMovie (and the newly purchased Fincal Cut Express), and his reasoning and explanation of HD video and how to down-convert, move video to external sources and the like... not only made me laugh, but I waitied till we were done, then I pulled him over and asked him to please read up a bit more on HD in general, and not to give out false information... otherwise, on the Mac front... he did a decent job.
Now, the point of all that was... if my Parent's were other Mac users... who were told this information, and weren't corrected, they would pass this along to countless other know nothings... and where would the Mac community be... oh, pretty much where it is now... mis-informed.
P.S. I'm not a Justin Long fan either.
I like my Mac, I like my PC (not as much as my Mac)... and, I don't care what you like!
OSX isn't that wonderful.

OSX isn't that wonderful. Sure its cool because it is basically BSD Unix, but Apple had little to do with the fact that BSD is such a great OS. All they did was write a GUI that had the look and feel of the old Mac OS.
And, I wouldn't say that Vista sucks now. I HATED Vista for the 1.5 years of it's existence, but recently started using it again and have to say that Vista SP1 really is a brilliant OS once you get past the compatibility issues (which are diminishing as hardware mfgs start making Vista drivers). I'll take Vista over OSX any day.
Mac's are basically just PCs anyway. And you can load OSX and just about ANY PC. I built a bottom grade computer from spare parts ($35 Celeron E1200 dual core, 1GB ram, $40 Foxconn Mboard), and loaded OSX 10.5.2 on it. Works like a champ. So I have a "Mac" without having to spend $2K on what is basically just a normal old PC in a fancy case.
Apple is basically just Dell in disguise. All the apple-zealot retards are falling all over themselves to waste their cash to buy more Macs and Iphones. Losers. Thanks alot though, my 401K is sitting pretty thanks to all those Apple 'tards.
Enjoyable but...

Thanks for the list... an enjoyed read. I also read the 25 reasons that were
linked to... and some of them were waay out there. It occurred to me that instead of perpetuating the "Windows is
better because" vs. "Macs are better because" banter,
you might have instead gone through their 25 reasons and revealed the BS. Now,
I'll recognize credit where it's due--your writeup did seem more factual, but
then again, you didn't have to spit out 25 reasons. It just annoys the hell outta me when I see people arguing about which
OS is "better" without factual information. I think that part of the
reason for the ongoing argument is that many people can't differentiate Windows
from Dell (or gateway, hp, etc.). They hate their Dell, and therefore, windows
sucks. Whereas... a Mac is a Mac. Always the same OS, and always the same
form factor. Those of us here who build our own PCs and are aware of hardware prices know
that Macs are a bit of a rip-off. Smart people buy the mac because they like
the OS, not because the hardware is worth the cash.I don't own a Mac, but I can say that I've had some good experiences with
them. Maybe the reason I don't own a copy of OSX is because it comes attached
to overpriced, difficult-to-upgrade/modify/access hardware. (Okay, and I also
haven't attempted to built a "hackintosh"). I really do like XP as
well... Vista-- I never bought into. I also like linux a
LOT, it's just the compatibility issues (hardware and software) that kill me.anyway... I enjoyed the opportunity to share my 2 cents...
Back at ya!

Don't say I'm ignorant about PCs, considering I just switched over after 9 years of M$ (I'm 15. give it a rest). Many friends asked me what I love about OS X, but I just can't pinpoint it. I do believe my MX revolution has more buttons than your G5, no? As for the person who wanted a dream machine. try maxing out all the options for a MacPro.
Who was so ignorant to think that Apples can't support 4gb? They've been supporting it for ages. And didn't anyone read the troubles one of the writers had with 64bit? shameful for such ignorance for both sides, learn your facts before you start bashing.
As for upgrading... what can I salvage from my desktop? AGP FX5600, Socket A AMD XP1800+, no SATA, PATA 160GB filled, DVD burner, 430W PSU, 1gb DDR ram. If anyone wants to donate for me to upgrade, email me!
If you're referring to me as ignorant...

I stated that they can not use many of the new or upcoming 64 bit versions of the software. Due to their change from Carbon to Cocoa, Macs are being left in the dust for the time being when it comes to 64 bit applications created for OSX by leading companies. Therefore OSX in my opinion is a bigger failure than Windows haters can pretend Vista to be.
There's a million reasons why Macs are worthless. It's just not worth my time to argue this anymore, especially when many are so well known and posted below.
Actually leopard is quit

Actually leopard is quit capable of running 64-bit apps. Also, Apple is now compiling OS X with the llvm back-end and gcc front-end which is why OS X runs quite well on simliar yet different (slower AND faster) hardware than base/custom macs.
Apple can get up and go wherever they want to with their code base very quickly, imo, far superior foundation than MS. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Apple is the only one removing old and useless habits (security blankets?) of computer engineers and MS just keeps on with their requirements for RAID drivers (via FLOPPY). Apple is also planning to dump GCC front-end. Where is Ubuntu on this one? Oh yeah, they don't care.
Haha

IMO, WinVista is definetly equal to or superior to osx.
I mean - what does osx have that windows doesn't??
As for the visual stuff - there's always linux :D !
haha no. 10 is true!

I personally like vista and

I personally like vista and m$ better. Macs are nice but overrated and overpriced. I'd rather get a decent windows pc for $600-$800, instead of a decent mac $1200-$1800. Some people may like looks and ease of use, but i don't give a crap. Looks mean nothing. I would also rather be with the company who rules 90% of the market rather than the ones who rule less than ten percent. Remember.... Compatibility and gaming. Microsoft has the edge on those categories. While some of you say you can run windows on a mac, guess what, you have to buy a full version of vista or xp to take advantage of that (about 200.00+).
