What do you do for a living?  How would you like it if all of a sudden, people started getting whatever you did for free, and you ended up screwed because it's all 1s and 0s.

I watch a lot of shows from overseas via the internet. They are not available in America even if you wanted to pay-to-watch. Give me a legal way to watch all my favorite shows then I’ll comply. The media doesn’t want to upgrade to the new generation. Media should be more interactive with desired content available at any time… instead of poor quality illegal torrents or streaming clips off the internet. I’d like to come home then choose what shows I want to watch (without the aid of a computer or recorder/DVR) at the flip of a switch on an interactive television. Assumed quote, “It will give them a better ability to pirate content.” False, they are doing it now without a hitch. I’m personally not the type to watch something illegally if I can watch it legally regardless of the cost. We keep talking about the damn future, yet we let these corporate assholes hold everything back for profit. 2050 is going to look hardly different from now if these companies don’t stop their crooked ways. XD

Piracy is a natural backlash to the current regime of perpetual copyright.  Is it the right thing to do?  Probably not.  Is it understandable?  Yes.

Pirates may "steal" "intellectual property", but by the same token, the folks who create the content "stole" the culture from us a long time ago.  It used to be that when you created something, you could profit off of it for a while, but then you gave it to society (the public domain) so that they could build on it. These days?  The creators never give back.  They build on the shoulders of what came before, and then zealously guard their own contributions with a pack of lawyers until the end of their lives -- at which point, their children take over for them.  And, if things continue as they have been, their children's children will take over for them, and so on, and so on, and so on.

"What ho!" you say, "What of those who pirate brand new games, movies, and music?"  Well, you probably don't say "What ho!" but I like to imagine you saying it.  But anyway, once one has learned not to respect copyright (and that happens very easily once one sees that the entirety of their culture is behind lock and key), they don't just disrespect it with regard to some things -- no, they disregard it altogether.  And so, by giving copyright such pervasive power and perpetual length, the powers that be have done more damage to it than could ever be comprehended.  You see, copyright is a legal fiction -- it has no natural basis, and exists solely in the minds of a culture.  And so, when you have a generation that overwhelmingly rejects the fiction, as this one does, the fiction ceases to exist.

Exactly! But what I don't get is how people came up with copyrights when, in fact, nothing is completely original. Creativity is nothing but combining as many previous ideas/observations as possible to make something new. And guess what, mash up creators are sued for copyright infringement ALL the time, just for combining different content to make something new. Why don't companies sue each other for "stealing their ideas" instead of pirates who are only observing their ideas? Companies are the real thieves not pirates.

Well said.

With all the things going on in the world THIS is what Joe Biden has the time to tackle??? Jackass. I wonder how much the media corporations have put into his campaign fund or how many lobbyist perks he's received?

No citizenship or green card, you get free education and health care. Don't feel like working, collect disability. Not making enough money, have tax payers pay your credit card bills and rent.

Consumers finally having leverage over super media corporations in the music, gaming, and movie industry, jail them.

Music downloading dosen't involve riots and broken windows. It dosen't terrorize people. If anything music piracy is the internet equivalent of J-walking.

Look another dumb fucking politician, they forgot that they are there to represent us not big business. Fuck all politicians.

Sure, let's go ahead and prosecute citizens while allowing illegal immigrants free reign, room, and board courtesy of our tax dollars.  Sounds like a real winning plan, there, Joe!

"But piracy is theft. Clean and simple. It's smash and grab. It ain't no different than smashing a window at Tiffany's and grabbing [merchandise],"

 LOL

It would be more like i walked into that store, made a copy for myself and left.

avatar

Yusonice

So its not really stealing. just making a copy which costs close to nothing to make

avatar

schmitty6633

....Except that copy is someone's belonging which they spent months, maybe years to make

avatar

tri8gman

...so they get paid for it by the majority of the population. If that person invests in stopping people from copying it such that it makes the price of each copy higher, and maybe even make the copies harder to use by legit customers, then that person will have lower sales. Not everyone is a criminal. This isn't Mad Max. Most people are still civil, law abiding, and relatively respectful.

We still have crime because we haven't instated a Big Brother system nor do we really have the resources to invest in keeping everyone (everywhere) honest. You cannot eliminate the chaos, you'll only hurt yourself more by trying to control it. Even physical businesses have "fell off the truck" calculations.

MLK was proud to be doing illegal things.  He was proud to be a criminal as were others at the time.  They flaunted the laws to prove a point and they changed things.  That is how it is done.

If enough people get behind changing copyright laws, they will change as well.  The rampant piracy is proof that the system is broken.   Things will not get any better for the content providers and their attempts to clamp down on it are only going to continue to make it worse.
