Logitech Lists Benefits of Next Generation Webcam Technology
Built-in webcams are everywhere these days, some of which are better than others. Whether it's for integrated webcams or standalone models, there's still room for innovation, and Logitech is at the forefront of pushing through new technologies. The latest fad in webcam technology is Full HD 1080p support, one of a handful of features Logitech is introducing to business users.
The other two major technologies are onboard H.264 compression and USB Video Class (UVC) driver-less install, both part of a handful of premium features designed to enhance enterprise videoconferencing and unified communications.
"In collaboration with Skype, Logitech is the first to offer true 1080p videoconferencing at a maximum 30 frames per second for a more life-like experience with fluid motion and vivid colors, overcoming the barrier to acceptance for unified communications (UC) solutions when video quality is too low to keep employees engaged," Logitech said in a statement.
Advanced H.264 hardware encoding is especially intriguing. When paired with a compatible H.264 videoconferencing device, webcams utilizing this technology will manage video compression on its own without tapping into the PC's processor. The upshot is better multi-tasking performance during video calls and the ability to run several programs during collaborative projects such as creating presentations or revising spreadsheets, Logitech says.
These technologies will first appear in Logitech's upcoming HD Pro Webcam C920 ($100) later this month. The C920 is a Skype-certified webcam with a Carl Zeiss glas lens, 20-step autofocus, 78-degree field of view, dual microphones, and Logitech RightLight 2 technology for clearer images in dimly lit environments.
