Logitech: Consumers Have a Love/Hate Relationship with Their Laptops
Logitech went and commissioned a self-serving study on the "significant sacrifices" laptop users make in exchange for mobility, and while Logitech obviously has a vested interest here, the results are nonetheless interesting.
According to Wakefield Research, which carried out the study for Logitech, heat is a hot topic in the mobile crowd. Of those surveyed (594 Americans aged 18 and older who own or regularly use a laptop), nearly half said they've had to stop using their notebook because the heat buildup became too much to handle. And nearly a two-thirds -- 62 percent -- believe they could literally fry an egg on the bottom of their laptops.
"Our lineup of lapdesks can help alleviate the issues people experience with laptop heat," said Denis Pavillard, vice president of product marketing for laptop accessories. "Options such as our Logitech Portable Lapdesk N315 are slim enough to take along in a laptop bag, and others such as our Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N700 or the Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N550, can shield users from heat and deliver rich, full stereo sound too."
Self serving as it may be, Logitech's commissioned study isn't the only one on the topic of laptop heat. A recently published article in the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics said that chronic exposure to heat on the underside of laptops can lead to "erythema ab igne," otherwise known as 'toasted skin syndrome,' an unsightly rash resulting from prolonged contact to any significant heat source.

Yeah, a lot of non technical people don't realize that you make sacrifices when you buy a laptop. They just think of it as a portable computer. I've never actually bought one because I've never really needed a computer on the go, and I'd rather put money into my desktop computer.

but they do have problems with being a Maximum PC... My Lenovo S10 is easy to carry around, has no heat problems but makes me want a portable computer with enough power to easily surf several tabs of internet, listen to some music or play movies.

Trying to do everything on a portable device. Yes it's convenient but, do you really spend that much time away from your desktop that you need to have such a powerful portable? Sure, road trips, yeah I get that but, take a shuttle or a big laptop on the road trip and leave the netbook for the short breaks at Starbucks to update the profile and check the e-mail, not for everything. In short, if you must live behind your devices, live at your desk and stay home or at the office.
