I've found that, even though my current DVD writer will write at up to 16x, I get better quality from 8X or less, so other than data storage what good is speed.

Whoop-Di-Frigging-Do! This is the age of the BD drive. We need to be innovating in Blue Ray and letting DVD go the way of the DoDo bird.

As long as manufacturers still invest time and money into DVD we will never see BlueRay BD-R/RW DL drives become fast and affordable and as long as the adoption rate remains low then the BD recordable media is still going to be stupid expensive.

There is no reason why BD media has to be so expensive. The only reason why it is is because there are but a few suppliers and since very few people actually purchase BD media it's going to remain expensive. In order for prices to drop we need companies to go all out and start churning out inexpensive BD drives and media. BD media shouldn't be anymore expensive than what DVD media costs today.

Damn it people quit putting up with old technology. Adopt BD already. We need to let the suppliers know that if they make them that we will buy them. And $50 bucks is about right for a DL multiformat BD writer drive. Anything with DVD in the name needs to be in a context as an extra feature to the standard Blue Ray formats.

Well, considering I have the Samsung 22x SH-S223 internal drive and I can't find any media around my area (including newegg) faster than 16x......I'll pass. Although with some memorex 16x DVD + R's, I have hit 18x, but it has been hit n miss and the new features of this lite-on drive look promising. But it's just not enough for me to shell out money  before my samsung goes kaput!!
