Lian Li Swings 'The Hammer,' a Full Tower PC Case with HDD Trays
Thor had a hammer, and it was a hulking chunk of metal also known as Mjolnir that could only be wielded by those deemed worthy by Odin, ruler of the Norse gods. While no PC geek will ever get a chance to wield it, we can possess 'The Hammer,' the second name Lian Li has given its new PC-90 full tower chassis, which also happens to be a hulking chunk of metal.
Like all Lian Li cases, the PC-90 is constructed of all-aluminum and available in "striking black" or "silver hairline-brushed." It measures 9.05 (W) x 20.15 (H) 19.25 (D) inches and can swallow a variety of motherboard form factors, including HPTX, EATX, XL-ATX, regular ATX, micro ATX, and mini ITX.
The Hammer takes a different approach to mounting hard drives. Rather than shoving your HDDs and/or SSDs into drive bays, they're mounted vertically on two trays inside the left panel. The benefits are two-fold. First, this orientation frees up the entire back of the case for larger motherboards. And secondly, it doesn't obstruct airflow, Lian Li says. Each tray supports up to six 3.5-inch HDDs or 2.5-inch SSDs held in place by thumbscrews, for a total of 12 drives in all.
Other features include support for videocards up to 15.74 inches, USB 3.0, a pair of 140mm front fans, a 120mm rear fan, washable air filters, and liquid cooling holes.
The PC-90 will be available in September for around $219. You can view the product page with photo gallery here.

Might make a nice home server case? Being able to install 12 HDD's like that?

Wouldn't that mean either removing the hard drives every time you opened the case, or removing the motherboard? That seems slightly dangerous either way to remove a side panel. Unless I'm looking at this thing wrong and just can't comprehend what I'm seeing.

I think you can still open it up from the right side of the case?

Interesting, but I still like the original way of mounting. Especially in my Lanboy AIR.
