LG's Skinny Frame Plasma HDTVs Squeeze into 25mm
Boy has it been a tough year or so for those who took the plunge into HDTV territory back when bulky rear-projection units were all the rage. Since then, skinnier, brighter units have emerged, many of which cost less than their chunky counterparts.
The latest thin-framed HDTV to emerge comes from LG, who just announced a line of plasma sets measuring a scant 25mm thick (for those who shake an angry fist at the metric system, we'll save you the Google conversion - 25mm breaks down to just less than an inch thick).
That's right, LG chose to go plasma for its 'Skinny Frame' line, as the company has dubbed them. LG says the new HDTVs come capable of a 600Hz refresh rate with 1080p support. They also come with three HDMI ports and a single USB port.
LG's releasing these first in its home market of Korea. The 50-inch model will run about $1,500, while the 60-inch unit checks in at about $3,325.

I brought home a bulky (more like..Huge) Hitachi 50 inch rear projection HDTV (720P) back in 2003. I was blind-sided by 1080P just a couple of years later. Even though I spent many hours online researching HDTVs, I never once read anything about 1080P that summer, because if I had I certainly would have waited. Ditto for Blu-ray, too (anyone interested in buying a used DVD collection?). Despite the electronic industry's subterfuge, I am still glad I purchased the Hitachi. It has served me well over the last seven years, and will continue to do so in the bonus room. It has been replaced by a Panasonic 50 inch plasma (1080P) that cost half as much. I am amazed at the rapid pace of technological advances in the last 15 years. Hell, we had to wait 60 years to go from 480 lines of resolution with NTSC to 720 lines. Now in less than 10 years we go from 720P to 1080P. How much longer before we have to upgrade again?

I remember when LG used to be called Goldstar and they produced piece-of-shit devices that would rival Emerson and Symphonic in their crap-tacularity.

Maybe the author meant 60Hz? But wow, that's pretty impressive. It seems like every manufacturer is focusing on slimming down LCD tv's. But plasmas aren't getting too much attention.

Not a typo, plasma doesn't really have refresh rates in the same sense as LCDs do.

There is no such thing as a TV with a 600 Hz refresh rate. The plasma manufacturers have started listing their sub-field rate in their specs hoping people will compare it to the refresh rates on the 240 Hz LCD's. Looks like the author has fallen for the tactic.

The asians just love to have some hotty next to their products for no good reason. Seriously, every promotion picture of a TV or computer monitor has one. She's not even holding on to a remote or anything. What's the point?

... it's support the degradation of women, but on the other hand, beauty attracts and sex sells.
It's not just asians who are doing it, but USA does it quite well - seen any ads for Budweiser with their hotties in it? Even TV game shows do it: Does anyone think Vana White is a co-host of WoF?

To be entirely honest and since my wife doesn't read this website, if the asian chick wasn't there I would of overlooked this article. Otherwise its just another tv, no matter if its "capable" of 600mhz refresh rate, or what ever else it holds true or speculates.
