LGA1366's Last Stand: Gordon Evaluates Intel's Smack Over 2 and Gigabyte's G1 Assassin
Yes, the sun may be setting on LGA1366, but if you want lots of cores and you want them from Intel or you want full tilt PCI-E slots, the veteran LGA1366 socket is your ticket. Maximum PC's Gordon Mah Ung gives you a quick look at Intel's much upgraded DX58SO2 or "Smack Over 2" motherboard and unpacks Gigabyte's mother of all LGA1366 boards: The G1 Assassin XL-ATX board. This board packs hardware we've never seen on a board before and also tilts the price tag to a level we've never seen.

Hey MaxPC,
Ya'll really need to get some Lavalier Mics to wear on your shirts so it's not the camera recording the audio. I'm not sure what camera ya'll are using so perhaps it has an XLR input, if not, get a mixer just in case. As for camera shots, perhaps have a angled pedestal that the board can be sat on, so Gordon can just point to something on the board and this way the camera filming the pedestal never has to move. Just my 2 cents bc I enjoy the videos, I just think more effort can be made to make them that much better.
Take care,
Keith

If I've got the money (to throw away) on a $500+ motherboard; and $1000+ for one or more CPU's, then I think I'll choose the EVGA Classified SR-2

I had no luck overclocking SO2, curious to see your results.
Sad for a platform that is dead man walking.

If you buy the two parts seperately from the motherboard you have save $150 so I don't see how it's a good deal.

@chronium, The great feature of this motherboard is the embedded technology for the Bigfoot networking card and Creative sound card. so you will get to save the space for the video card and get to enjoy the benefit of onboard high speed LAN and awesome sound quality. That is the unique feature of GIGABYTE G1-killer series :)

I don't know if anyone else has noticed but to me it looks like your main camera is cocked slightly to the left. (just enough to be noticable).
I just found it a little distracting. Great videos though.

You gotta be crazy to invest 1k then ~600 for cpu and mobo alone... this late in the platforms life span. Holy crap.

Gordon,
Good review, but I don't think the south bridge heat sink looks are that big of a deal. Throw a couple of video cards on the board and you won't see it anyway.
