LG Pushes "Flicker Free" 3D Television
Wednesday marked the release of LG's Cinema 3D TV in Korea. According to LG, it's the world's first 3D TV officially certified as "flicker-free," which was granted by Intertek and TÜV, two certification agencies in Europe. The reason this matters, says LG, is that it virtually eliminates dizziness and eye fatigue that some people have experienced with other 3D displays.
It's a "game changer," according to LG President and CEO Havis Kwon. LG's Cinema 3D TVs employ the company's Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) technology, essentially a piece of special film that, like other 3D displays, separates the images for each eye. It ships with a pair of passive 3D glasses, which are both lighter and cheaper than active shutter glasses.
Other features include a wide viewing angle, DLNA/Wi-Fi/DVR ready, local dimming, 3D Light Boost, and handful other marketing bullets.
LG says it will follow the Korean release with a global rollout in March. No word yet on price.
