LG Looking to Make a Major Push in 3D Notebooks Next Year
LG firmly believes this whole 3D thing is more than just a passing fad, and by 2011, the South Korean electronics maker hopes to have raised 3D notebook shipments by 30 percent, LG said.
"With the availability of more 3D content, consumers are enjoying a new experience, and we think that'll drive growth of the 3D computer market," Harrison Park, LG's mobile communications PC business team leader, told reporters.
Wasting no time in moving towards that 30 percent shipment goal, LG today unveiled three new 3D notebook models in Korea. The new units are priced between 1.6 million won ($1,331) to 1.9 million won ($1,580), representing about a 20 percent premium over 2D models.
One of the challenges LG faces, however, is the need for 3D shutter glasses, at least in the short term. Looking longer term, there's a push to take 3D glasses out of the equation, like Nintendo is doing with its upcoming 3DS handheld console. The downside is that glasses-free 3D displays have strict viewing angles for the effect to work, but this might not be such a major issue for notebooks and other single-viewer devices.
