Leaked 5970 Photo

Last month we posted a link to some early spy shots of the Radeon HD 5850 X2 & 5870 X2, but aside from the pictures, the post was a bit short on details. The card which still hasn’t been officially unveiled by AMD is still somewhat of a mystery, but the gang over at Alienbabeltech.com got a hold of some new photos and information that answers some, but not all of the questions we have about the new design.

Based on the reference card shown in the pictures, it appears as though this monster will require two power connections, one 8-pin and one 6-pin which are located just above the fan. Even if the power requirements of this beast don't shock you, the overall length of the card just may. Measuring in at a whopping 13.5 inches long, most enthusiasts without a full tower case will have a hard time fitting this into their machines. AMD responded quickly by stating that the photos were of an engineering sample, leading us to wonder if the card won’t shrink an inch or two prior to release.

The other big change since our last update is the new naming conventions. It now appears as though AMD will be dropping the “X2” designation and the cards will be known as the Radeon HD 5950 (Dual 5850’s), and the Radeon HD 5970 (Dual 5870’s).  Questions remain, but hey, its better then nothing right?

If AMD keeps their production cycle the same as with the 5870s and 5850s, expect only one 5970 to be made in the entire world. We'll have to share.

avatarWhy are they following the nVidiot naming scheme.

I found ATI's (#### x2) nameing scheme to be much more, ahem, honest, than nvidia (#9#). Why the change?

You can have your recession. I'm not participating.

Wow even I have doubts that it'll fit in my Silverstone TJ09 and it's a full tower.  Still an epic card, but couldn't they make it a bit smaller?  It's the size of a lot of high end workstation cards out there.

avatarWhat is it with computer companies and wierd names?

I know it isn't that wierd, but I still don't know why they changed the naming to 5970... I think that 5870x2 would have been better...

avatarConsumers

I can only think that the name change stems from a change in marketing.  I know that all of us here know that a 5970 is simply two 5870's packed into one board which makes the 5870x2 name make more sense, but to normal average consumers the x2 just might confuse them.  So having a name like 5970 will make it easier for the them to say "Oh, well it has a bigger number so it must be better."  Also, it will help resellers because they will not have to explain the x2 and why it makes it better than a non-x2 board. Though I will say that these are only my thoughts on the matter, so I could be completely wrong since I don't know anyone at ATI's marketing department.

avatarWell...

The only way I can think of offhand is an abomination of a case involving a Storm and an accordian borrowed from Weird Al Yankovich.  That's the clean version.  The unclean version involves 4 pneumatic penis implants from your local doctor...
