Larger Capacity Notebooks on the Horizon
Notebooks have some catching up to do with their desktop brethren in the storage department. Hard drive makers are now up to 3TB for single internal drives, and it will likely be a few years before we see the same capacity in mobile PCs, especially as higher priced (and lower capacity) SSDs grow in popularity. But for what it's worth, notebook makers say that mainstream notebook capacity will increase to 500GB in 2011, up from 320GB in 2010, DigiTimes reports.
You can thank Hitachi for this. Sources say Hitachi has begun offering 7mm, 2.5-inch 500GB hard drives for the same price as 9.5mm equivalents. By the end of 2011, 500GB hard drives will account for nearly a third of all notebooks.
That's still a drop in the bucket compared to desktop drives, and who knows how high desktop drives will scale in that same time frame. But it isn't all depressing -- for those willing to buy a higher end laptop, larger capacity options aren't hard to find, including 1TB and 1.5TB configurations (both of which are dual-drive solutions).

My 17" HP Laptop has two 250GB HDD. Know I now why they are getting out of making computers - The Dume Asses Can't build laptops. In the main drive I can put in 500GB drive, but my storage drive can't be bigger then 250GB. I have asked for a BIOS update there are none.
My 11.6" Alienware Netbook has a single 500GB HDD. I would love to find out if I can put a 750GB drive inside.
Laptop makers need to have it that users can pop out old drives and install new bigger and faster drives, or get out of making laptops.
I think that if you can have a Laptop where you can buy parts off the shelf and upgrade them like the Desktop PC's - every one will buy Laptops over Desktops. Just think and the end of the night, IT's can just put every one's Laptop in a safe and know that the data is safe.

No spinning hard drive in anything portable for me. My netbook (no bigger portable yet) has a 30 GB SSD. The price was perfect when I got it and it really speeds things up. The lack of space is a problem but keeps the focus on netbook uses in my case.

Well my notebook already came with practically a 500GB hard drive, so I guess I'm waiting for the rest of the market to catch up. I've never managed to fill it yet either, since I use my desktop for storing most of my media.

If you opt for a higher end laptop you can get 1TB hard drives from Western Digital. So 2TB in a laptop isn't unreasonable. Even 3 is possible for the highest end laptops. That is if you could boot from that size.

My notebook has a 500 GB Seagate Momentus XT installed. Removed a 320 WD oem drive, however I'm not really noticing that much better performance out of the hybrid drive. I really don't feel the need to have a super amount of storage on my laptop as I have 3 terabytes in my desktop rig.
