L3p D3sk Case Mod: Not Your Average Computer Desk
Remember the totally kick-ass, Light Cycle-inspired scratch PC mod by veteran modder Boddaker (aka Brian Carter) that was featured on our site recently? Called TRON Lightcycle PC, Boddaker’s entry for Cooler Master’s annual case mod competition (scratch build category) is currently the third most voted case mod in contention.
As of now, the top spot belongs to the L3p D3sk by a 30-year-old Dutch guy named Peter. The rig is housed inside a desk, effectively making it an “all-in-one desk”, as Peter likes to call it.
Completely made of aluminium and glass, the water-cooled L3p D3sk boasts the following specs:
- Intel Core i7 980X @ 4.5 Ghz
- Corsair Dominator GT 6GB DDR3-2000 CL7 (Elpida) @ 2000 7-7-7-20-1T
- ASUS Rampage III Extreme
- ASUS GTX580 SLI
- ASUS Xense + Sennheiser Xense
- Highpoint RocketRAID 3560 24x SATA-300 2 GB
- Bigfoot Networks™ Killer™ 2100 Gaming Network Card
- 1x Intel 510 120Gb
- 3x Corsair F60 raid0
- 6x Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000 12TB raid5
- 2x Optiarc AD-7241S-0B
- Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 800W
- Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 700W
- Dell U2711 27″ IPS
- 2 x Dell 1703 17″ portrait
- Logitech Illuminated keyboard
- Mionix Naos 5000
- Mionix Alioth 400
Even though it took Peter the best part of an year to put everything together, he completed most of the work during a three-week vacation. For someone avowedly new to the case modding scene, it's a tremenedous achievement. If you want, you can help Peter conquer the scratch build category of the CM 2011 Case Mod Competition by voting for his case mod here.

Hard to see everything in the pictures shown, but I am pretty sure a 6 disk raid 5 would make ~10Tb worth of usable drive space, not 12.

It never fails to amaze me why some people would rather crack at someone than admit they did something pretty cool. Last I checked this concept of a PC inside a table with pretty cool lights is not a registered tradmark or patent so anyone can do this and those who do i consider pretty cool as I would love to have something like this but I don't think i could ever build one myself.
When any of you have the time, the money and the skills to build this or something better, do it and then come on here and criticize other peoples mods. in the mean time, get a life. This mod is cool regardless if it was done before.

It was cool the first time around. If I built a computer using only the parts available 2 years ago and submitted my rig it would get poor reviews by today's standards. This guy submitted a design that is at least 2 years old. This is technology driven publication and so I'd expect to see cutting edge ideas and designs. I can promise you that there are newer ideas than this. Stamp metal and box frames aren't Maximum. I have plenty of designs that are far superior to this and appropriate for the components and settings that would be used. I have seen at least 20 designs made through Google Sketch-Up that should be featured if this made it even though they haven't been built yet. I'm impressed with precision machining, exotic materials, and first and foremost IMAGINATION. I speak for myself and no one else and I find cheap over-priced flimsy computer cases with gates and doors and any other obstruction that is put between me and my optical drive to be total garbage. It isn't just this guy that has failed. 95% of the cases that you can buy today fit that description. To be fair I believe he did an exceptional job of polishing the PM featured rig. You also have to be honest and point out that this is rig PM featured...with lipstick on. This article should be called 'Putting Lipstick on a Rig'. It's kinda catchy. It's just an opinion that has no sugar coating...not a fact.

I get your point but I figure criticize Maximum PC for posting this if it really isn't Maximum PC quality, but don't bust on the guy just because he didn't put state of the art glass and metal, the latest in hardware and some kind of freaky artwork that looks like it's 3D or something. You work with what you have and when I see more people doing this then maybe I can agree with the quality. But in the mean time, this is cool and I want something similar.
To be honest even I noticed it lacked most design and detail. It is very plain but still cool. I have several ideas of my own. If I could afford it I would do it too.

Well, we know this guy reads Popular Mechanic or Maximum PC. He polished and old idea. That isn't Maximum. What is maximum is the amount of space this thing takes up and the cooling system over-kill. 8 months for this is a maximum waste of time also. I'd rather see a lot of imagination and a little money than a lot of money and little imagination. It looks like Librace on the inside and a tank on the outside. Guady amounts of bling that look more Fast and the Furious instead of Bugatti Veyron. This isn't refined or mind blowingly fast. 4.5 gigahertz!?!? ALL that cooling and you get 4.5 gigahertz. It's like slapping an intercooler on a moped. Corsair H70 and your done.

That was Popular Mechanics and not sure why this mod is even featured. It's cool, but it's not original. There was a Batman mod which as also published in the MaximumPC magazine. Now that's original.
Here is the link to the Pop Mech desk mod, published back on 2009

IE9 and I can see it fine. I did not like some of what Chrome did and added so I have deleted it.

Hi Pulkit, not too complain, but if you can, try to post some more pics up a little closer. Its harder to make out the coolness of the desk. I think it would definitely help your articles impact a little more. Thanks

Ditto - that is one damn cool looking desk from that distance. Would like to see some close-up shots.

Oh I thought... nvm. In some point of time, you'd had to change the glass (if too many scratches)... I wonder how he would do that. :/

Since for some reason I can't edit my previous post. I should of added that I'm thinking of using the 3 monitor setup like he has for gaming. I've found a couple of 17" 5:4 monitors that are about as wide as my current one is tall. My idea is that it will add some surround to my gaming without actually having too much. Plus at $150x2 it's much more within my budget.

Looks great. I remember a mod like this someone did with an old wooden desk. The type teachers used to have in school. He replaced the top with plexi and had his parts underneath it. Not nearly the level of detail this one has though.
The one thing that has my interest peeked is the monitor setup. How whould you go about setting that up. I have a great 24" the HP LP2475W, but I'm pretty sure I don't want 2 more at $700m a shot. 2 monitors on the side like he has would work perfect.
