Finding new and creative ways to justify a gadget purchase is an important exercise (particularly for those of us with spouses). Most of the time the science is flawed, but we often choose to ignore that, particularly if its something we’ve been lusting after for months. If your one of the many who was holding out for just one more reason in favor of buying a Kindle, we might just have one for you.
According to a new study released by the Cleantech group, even though the Kindle’s environmental impact upfront was significant, the numbers drop dramatically over the devices lifespan. They say the Kindle can produce savings up to a 26,098 kg of CO2 if used to it’s fullest capacity, or 1,074 kg if it replaces a mere three books per month. The break-even point in terms of environmental impact is if your Kindle replaces just 22.5 books.
There you have it, does your wife want you to save the world? Guess she needs to let you buy a Kindle.

ya'll gotta understand. this is just a way they advertise/market the new product. People who believe in the message will actually go and get the kindle in hope of saving the Earth. Pretty funny that they end up giving money to some already-rich CEO of the Kindle company. This device will enable us to read free ebooks that we can get online. pretty great news for those that want to read books but dont want to pay.

If you really want to reduce paper waste then get rid of paper junk mail. All it's doing these days is wasting my time and propping up an outdated business model called the postal service.

Let me ad to that. I get no less than 6 phone books a year most from providers other than AT&T (my home phone) provider. I have to pick up and throw away i wish they would stop dropping them off.

not that it matters to me, but given your statement I have a funny feeling you believe in intelligent design as well?
I do, however, agree that the information gleened from this article is not a good enough reason to convince every reader drop a couple hundred bucks on an ebook reader, at least not in the near future, unless you find yourself getting paid far to well.
If it interests you, in reading up on the subject you may find that the point of Global warming isn't just the earth getting warmer (on average), it's actual total effects of that is that the weather patterns are more extreme on both sides of the fence - meaning colder winters, hotter summers and more storms over all (over the scope of the planet and not just where you happen to live).
I fear that if the worlds most reknown scientists of today (in the field) are right, New Orleans is doomed. They seem to believe we are doomed even if those of us not reknown in that field of science do not.

The planet naturally heats up and cools down because of the solar flares our sun emits. The temperature peaked in 1998 and has consistently decreased since then.

Since I am a conservative and don't believe in global warming or the impact of CO2 on the environment, this reason won't work for me. It does save some trees though and it is more convenient than bringing books with me. When the kindle supports color and when you magazine comes out in kindle format, I will consider it.

Global warming is good because it extends the planets growing seasons and increases our food supply. No I am not being sarcastic. I AM VERY SERIOUS. If Al Gore cares about everyone's CO2 footprint, how come he consumes 20X the energy than the average person?

for me personally, The kindle removes any and all enjoyment of books in general...So what..increase my carbon footprint, hell, i bought 3 books today. eat it b!tches.
