The Karmic Koala Makes Its Debut: Ubuntu 9.10 Now Available
Posted 10/29/09 at 04:25:26 PM by Bart Salisbury

Making good on its promise, Canonical is right now pushing out the door version 9.10 of Ubuntu, the infamous “Karmic Koala.” Ubuntu is one of the more popular renditions of open source Linux, that small, but dedicated, niche in the operating system universe that follows the path less taken.
And quite the path it is. Renai LeMay, of Cnet News, judged the current version, 9.04, to be “as slick and beautiful as Mac OS X and Windows 7.” Version 9.10 builds on this, adding faster boot times, a better driver for Intel integrated graphics, build in cloud storage, and a Software Centre that permits better management of applications. Ubuntu offers a suite of office applications, plus games, music, video, photo, email and chat software. And, naturally, includes Mozilla’s Firefox 3.5 for browsing the web.
Ubuntu is at home on PC or Mac hardware, and comes in 32-bit. Ubuntu also comes in a server edition. And a netbook version, Kubuntu, is also available. Get everything you need to know about Ubuntu 9.10 from our guide.

64-bit?

Is there a 64-bit desktop version? I can only seem to find the 32-bit version. I see the 64-bit server version, but not the desktop version.

Awesome. I thought that my old Sony laptop was solely a paperweight, but now Karmic seems to be geared exactly to it (the better 915 support, and the fact it runs better on low power systems). The only drawback is the download (either University of Waterloo or my ISP hates me).

Only 8 more hours before the download finishes! I hate the slow launch day speeds...

Download with Bittorrent

Bittorent gets faster the more users have the file. If you want it fast, download the torrent!
If you don't know how (you probably do), you can download the torrent from this link -- no software required. (Other than Java)

It's the x86 desktop version. Just click the download button below the box.

It's an in place upgrade of the x64 version. There are 1907 packages to be downloaded so I expect it to take some time. It doesn't help that the servers are under a fair deal of stress at the moment.
Thanks for the tip anyway, and thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt as to whether or not I know how bittorrent works.

It also comes in 64 bit, although your article seems to imply it's 32 only. I don't think Kubuntu is specifically designed for netbooks either; that's called ubuntu netbook remix. Easy to see how you might have gotten confused there.
I think the thing about 32

I think the thing about 32 bit was a typo.
Kubuntu Netbook

I think what they were trying to imply is that there is now a netbook version of Kubuntu available. It's pretty slick and it has the AIR theme all throughout it. Go d/l it from www.kubuntu.org and fire it up in a VM and try it out.
The only thing I hate about upgrading Ubuntu is...

the slow downloads. I am the type of guy that prefers to download the ISO vs upgrading "in place". That way, not only do I not have to worry about it messing up and me not having a CD, but I like to have fresh installs to mess with :)

I have a apt-mirror running at hone and started getting the packages for it about a month ago just to avoid the slow d/l speeds of the release day. If you have several buntu machines running at home I suggest setting up a apt-mirror for your home this way you have a server that gets all the packages and then just point your other machines to the server and viola.

It looks nice, but I think I'll wait for Masturbating Monkey to come out before I upgrade.
That's hilarious.
