Jon Peddie Research: Over 2 Billion Mobile Processors to Ship by 2016
There's long been a market for mobile devices, but never like it is now, and not anything like it will be by the time the year 2016 rolls around. According to market research firm Jon Peddie Research (JPR), the demand for mobile devices is growing at a crazy rate and will create a market for over two billion processors in the next five years.
Not surprisingly, mobile phones (smartphones, feature phones, and other phones) will account for over a billion mobile chips by 2016, and closer to 2 billion. JPR predicts we'll see over 300 million tablet shipments by that time, along with 91 million handheld consoles and 100 million yearly eBook reader shipments.
"The processors powering these devices will be truly amazing, consuming remarkably little power, built in the latest nanometer technology, and delivering unbelievable performance and functionality," JPR says. "And although all of the devices will share some functionality and capabilities, no single device will kill any of the others... at least immediately. Each device will have a different form, primary function, and price. All will be connected all the time, and most will have 3D displays and cameras."
JPR says some 16 processor companies and 4 IP suppliers will chase the mobile market, compared with four or five chip makers catering to the PC market.
