It's Official: Standalone 250GB Hard Drive Now Available for Xbox 360
We've been hearing rumors that Microsoft would make available a standalone 250GB hard drive for its Xbox 360 console, even though it was just over a month ago that Xbox Live Product Manager Aaron Greenber denied any plans to offer the larger unit outside of special bundles. Greenbrier apparently didn't get the memo.
"Make sure you have enough space for the content you love," Microsoft announced on the Xbox 360 Dashboard. "The 250GB Hard Drive is the perfect storage option for your Xbox 360 Console, with plenty of space to hold all your downloaded games, movies, television shows, music, and more. Purchase one today at a participating retailer or visit http://www.xbox.com/accessories for more information."
We did just that, and sure enough, the standalone drive is now available for purchase. The 250GB upgrade comes with a data transfer kit so you won't have to worry about losing your saved data, and is also packed with HD game demos, videos, and an assortment of Xbox LIVE Arcade game trials - in other words, console crapware.
Th 250GB standalone drive sells for $130, while the 120GB has been cut to $100.

Really, the 250gb drive is cool and all, but you don't NEED it. I just got the Final Fantasy xbox, with a special edition 250gb drive that has Final Fantasy etched into it, which is cool i guess, but why does it matter? A 250gb drive is more than enough for consoles unless you load it up with movies or something. That or install all your games to the drive I suppose. I don't get why people feel the need for more hard drive space than they'd need. My old xbox had over 140 game saves on it and I was nowhere near full, and there was about 15 KOTOR ones which take up 2000 blocks a piece minimum. My xbox now is really, really empty on that 250gb drive, and i've downloaded probably 20 demos and done saves for FFXIII, GTA4, Shaun White Snowboarding, Resident Evil 5 and Halo 3.

Only a $30 difference b/w 120GB & 250GB? Why even continue to offer the 120GB?

I just can't get over the fact that you can get an external or internal hard drive from NewEgg that is 2 to 6 times larger for roughly the same price. When I wanted to upgrade the drive on my PS3, I went to the local parts store and grabbed the first 2.5" SSD I saw that I could afford (128GB). I came home, took out the old drive, put in the new one and was on my way with NO PROBLEMS.
Why can't we do that with the X360?
I was beyond impressed with the 360 when it came out but it wasn't long after I bought my PS3 that my 360 started collecting dust. I would have played it a LOT more if LIVE were free and the system wasn't so proprietary with upgrades. I even bought the HDDVD player (back when it wasn't clear who would win).

Kudos to Microsoft for jacking up their prices.
I'm still waiting for the adapter to fall below $90. Till then, I can careless about LIVE.

...isn't sold at a loss or at very thin margins over the cost of hardware alone. There is a whole lot more to what makes the Xbox what it is than just the hardware, and Microsoft has been putting a whole lot of capital behind it.
You can have your recession. I'm not participating.

Lots of people like reading this type of news and don't want to go elsewhere for it, so if you don't like it then just ignore it.

As there is still NO comparison in media streaming on virgin360 to XBMC what's the point?

So if I bought a 360 at launch and now this drive I would in essences pretty much have spent as much as building a gaming PC or VERY close to it? I came up with $530. OOPS, gotta pay for Xbox live another $50, $580. Damn glad I prefer PC gaming over my consoles. Consoles are getting way to expensive for what you get. At least with a PC you can do EVERYTHING.

I doubt that a $400/$500 pc bought at the end of 2005 would be very upgradable right now.

that's a good point. i think with all these hardware updates to the 360 or PS3 if you were to buy a new console for every upgrade it would cost more than 2009's mid-range Dream Machine.

Still over twice the price that it should be, as a comparable external drive from Tigerdirect is $50

why bother with this in a pc magazine?
i rather have them devote their time, efforts, and magazine to just pc.

Agreed! There's not many places PC hardware enthusiasts/gamers can get away from console news. MaximumPC should be one of those places.
