That is awesome. Now people can understand when we call them sheep.

avatar

they know exactly why we call them sheep. they just put up their steve jobs reality deflection shield (patent pending). no other single group of people distort reality/truth like sheep. that is exactly how crapple likes it too. blindly lead the into anything.

I just got rid of my 3GS which I have had since it's launch day. It was a great phone for its time but I've reached a point where I want a much larger screen. 4" just doesn't cut in 2012 IMO. I just got a Samsung Galaxy S III for my work phone and I'm very happy with it. I can't imagine going back to a smaller screen. Though I do realize I'm taller than most people and have bigger hands so while the S3 may be completely user friendly for my hand smaller people may have trouble with it and I guess that's why Apple is trying to sell their new iPhone as a one size fits all.

avatar

jgottberg

I have to wonder if the quality of the iPhone will suffer now that Apple has outsourced much of what Samsung used to provide. If quality suffers, this might be the start of Apple's decline, at least in the cell phone arena.

YAWN !!! Nothing new with Apple as usual.

avatar

Jerjef

This new iPhone is great for any Apple fan who's upgrade period is up or anyone who still has a pre-iPhone 4 device. Outside of that, I see no reason to get this phone.

All non-Apple apps will be letter boxed, which is a good portion of the app store so your viewing experience is no better than any prior iPhone. Also by the time 3rd party developers start taking advantage of the new horsepower, another iPhone will be out anyway and that one may have some worthwhile add-ons.

4G is nice, but frankly it should've been in the iPhone 4, since 4G was available way back then, so I guess if you want 4G, go for it.

Longer battery life is debatable.

Way to go on the camera improvements. 8M? Woohoo! Welcome to 2010. Panoramic shots? Wow, even the Galaxy W does that!!

If you have an iPhone 3GS or older, or you just want to get in on the Apple way of life, go for it, but if you already have an iPhone 4 or 4S, this phone is a waste of money.

I moved to iOS from android just before iPhone 4s because I wanted to try it out this time around. I like it, and I like my iPad and my iPod nano that I can wear on my wrist like a watch when I want to. The new hardware they released, IMO, is nothing to get all excited over. Sure there are a few improvements, and there are some things negative to point out too, but the bottom line here is that there is nothing innovative, nothing really new. Apple was the one pushing the envelope, introducing new things, and now it just feels like they are making half assed attempts at keeping up with their competition (because it doesn't matter, people will buy it anyway). I'm a little dissapointed by what Im seeing...the only selling points for their new hardware are gimmicky exclusives. Example: Siri is only available on the new iPad, which basically has a little bit of a better display and essentially the same hardware as an iPad 2....that's not enough motivation for me to pay a premium price for apple hardware, but apparently it is for enough people that Apple can get away with it. I don't feel compelled to buy anything they announced.

Yawn! So, did anything important happen in the tech world yesterday?

avatar

wintercoder

Yeah... I know what you mean.

I check MaxPC a couple times a day... I'm starting to get worried about this site. I don't have any problem with their 'Daily Deals'... but when there are only two or three articles inbetween consecutive 'Daily Deals', I start to go 'YAWN' as well.

avatar

mattatooski

It is a worry alright. My ritual is waking up with coffee and sitting outside and going to this site. 3 or 4 stories of second hand news just doesnt do it for anymore .....

avatar

jgottberg

It would be a sad day for me if MaxPC failed to exist... Been a loyal reader since the days of Boot magazine.

It's witty, and pretty much sums up my thoughts. If I had a facebook account, I'd like that video ;)

(P.S.Yes, I do own a Galaxy (1 and a 3)

avatar

yeah that is a great video. i linked to it yesterday along with 3 other videos. you should check out videos 2 & 3 that i posted. it is sad but VERY VERY true.

I find it hard to understand how big companies like Apple can hype up something so much, and then when they release it, it is only very slightly better than its predecessor.

Looks exactly like the 4S, but with a bit better screen, a bit better gfx, a bit better cpu, a bit better camera. 4G ok. Meh, I wanted something a bit more advanced, a bit more unique.

avatar

Ghok

I rather like the iPhone. And this new generation has some nice improvements. The whole lighter and thinner thing is, imho, a step in the right direction.

That said, the apps available on Android are much better than they were even just a year ago. Which was the main reason I went with iOS last time, despite the Android phones having many other advantages. I think my next phone will be an Android... or I'll just go with the smallest and thinnest phone I can get, skip having a smartphone entirely, and just get myself a tablet.

C O O L ! Another round of BETA testing another new Apple product.

Love how they are saying the alleged battery life is 8 hours. In the real world bet ya it's 4 hours.

Can't wait to see all the Apple lemmings line up days before for this thing is sold and jumping up and down and doing the high five jumps and squealing like morons that they are paying to be beta testers again.

COOL.

avatar

sallystudios

Woot! Been waiting to upgrade my 3GS to the 5! Sept. 21st can't come fast enough!

avatar

Rift2

With 23 million People out of work you think they could makee this piece of junk here. I can't believe the News even covers stuff like this National News.

avatar

vistageek

I just can't believe that all the apps are now letter boxed. That's just sad. And mpcs spam filter is really annoying. And ineffective.

avatar

vistageek

I couldn't post that comment without the commentary on the spam filter. Apparently it was spam without it.

RUSENSITIVESWEETNESS

Just dying to own a phone that records and monitors my every fucking move, everything I say, everything I write.

avatar

ThomasLG

Yawn. If Apple released the iTurd, the faithful would line up to pay a premium for the revolutionary advancement in fertilizer.

I'll take my 80 GB S3 any day.

avatar

JLloyd13

at lest its not some tiny unnoticeable thing like last time. still, samsung phones are better overall. I'd take a note or s3 anyday over this new iphone

avatar

The blind hatred on this thread is amazing. I have used both iOS and (many) Android devices. Guess what? I prefer iOS. Does that make me a sheep? No. It makes me a human being with a personal preference. I don't fault others for their opinions, maybe 95% of this comment thread should try it. I enjoy the integration between my iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. Sometimes I like things to 'just work'. I own a Windows Desktop and laptop, but those are for other uses. I am a casual user when it comes to phones and tablets, as their use is primarily leisurely. Hate on Apple all you want, but maybe keep it to yourself every once in a while. You're all fueling the fan boy fire, and are part of the problem; not the solution.

avatar

fuzz_64

Your "just to work" comment is right if you're in an all Apple environment.. however.. I did some tests a few weeks ago with bluetooth file transfer. The results are as follows.

Apple -> Apple - pass
Apple -> WP7 / Android / BB7 - fail
WP7 / Android / BB7 / Symbian to each other - pass

In short, iPhone to iPhone worked fine.. iPhone to or from anything else failed miserably. All other devices played nicely with each other.

Thank you but I'll take open standards over enclosed environment ANY day. I don't "hate" Apple, but I do not like their business operation.. I am no "phandroid" either, even though I do have a Samsung phone. I am awaiting BB10 before deciding between WP8, BB10 and Android for my next device.

avatar

super_legit

Agreed. Getting all religious about technology and blindly hating every Apple product is sheep-like in its own way (no matter who the company is). These companies aren't paying you to use their products. It's the other way around. Blind brand-loyalty just doesn't make sense - try different platforms and pick what works best for you. As an owner of iOS, Android, and WP and a daily user of a Mac (at work) and a custom PC (at home) I can say there's things I really like about each platform. They all have different strengths and weaknesses or limitations.

avatar

Engelsstaub

Good luck with that. There's way too many little punks on the internet anonymously typing stupid shit about others and their product choices. Very important stuff.

Even Ars is getting overrun by idiots and flamebaiters who swear allegiance to some phone maker or OS. They feel this pressing need to tell everyone else what to like and what is best. Of course what is best always equals what they own and they feel their product choices define them. Everyone else is stupid, drink Kool-Aid, are sheep, and every other tired-ass cliche they saw a million times from cybertrolls.

Just use what you like and try not to interact with the idiots. Seriously: Ars posts stories about serious shit like climate change and there's less than twenty comments. Apple vs. Samsung? Two weeks later and people are still flaming away. Six hundred plus comments about a fucking phone they don't like. Idiots.

avatar

DeltaFIVEengineer

Nothing gets the tech lemmings worked up like an Apple product, I tell ya. 70 comments on this thread at the moment are equal to the past ten stories combined. Someone could make a robot that shits cotton candy and rainbows while giving you a backrub and a bean snap and it wouldn't garner half of the interest that an opportunity to Apple smear would.

If anyone here had two brain cells to rub together, they'd realize that most people don't give two shits about what you think about Apple. This is largely evidenced by their extreme market value and overall sales volumes.

Why is it so hard to just love technology, no matter who makes it, without having some arrogant shit head try to shove their opinions down your throat?

avatar

Engelsstaub

Bean snap...lol :D

Andacious

No.

Another boluxing to Apple users. What a piece of crap, Palm wannabe device.

*Twenty percent* lighter? That's awesome.

I'll be able to waddle to the fridge, like, ten times faster.

Does anyone else find it creepy that MacLife has so few comments that I honestly wondered when I would see Bruce Banner walking along the side of a road with his thumb out?

avatar

tony2tonez

Whats really funny is they changed the charging port. So now not only is everyone old iphones are useless (if they buy the new one) so are their chargers. Lol. And before someone points out, I know Sansung did the same thing with their new devices. Which is why I dont buy it. I love musb, and finding one anywhere and everywhere.

avatar

WiiKnee

Apple or Android - you are all slaves to the phone companies for paying >$60 a month for a minimum of two years!

avatar

khalladay

I recently switched to Ting (Sprint MVNO) and primarily use wifi to keep my bill under $15 a month. They have a great selection of Android phones and no nonsense billing. Soon they will be offering BYO(S)D or bring your own Sprint device.

No longer a slave to the big mobile providers.

Use this link and you can get $25 off your 1st device https://zrg8ce1cm.ting.com/

avatar

DR_JDUBZ

ITS CALLED UNLOCKING YOUR PHONE- then put a sim card in. im running my dell streak 5 at 15$ a month, bought the phone used, hacked and unlocked, why someone would do such a thing as buy one brand new is puzzling

avatar

tekknyne

Hell yeah! +1 for getting pwnd on cell phone charges.

avatar

Peanut Fox

Switched to Google voice for unlimited voice and text (free for national calls) and still have my grandfathered unlimited LTE plan through Verizon. Buy my phones off contract and pay just under 30 bucks a month with my company discount. The only actual cost I have is the phone itself, and the data plan. This has been working quite well for me these past years.

avatar

strykyr

Didn't Google threaten to sue crApple if they released an LTE device over patents? This should be good.

avatar

warlok180

I think HTC and Samesung are going to try to sue, but they will most likely lose and probably be thrown out like Samesung's claimed 3G patent infringements in the recent lawsuit. Apple uses a Qualcomm LTE chip in their phone and Qualcomm licenses the technologies from said companies.

Apple gets the license in return by purchasing the chips. Furthermore, Apple owns quite a few LTE patents themselves so I see this going nowhere. Finally, these are standard essential patents and are subject to FRAND terms so if they do get any money from Apple, it will probably be in the form of a licensed agreement.

I think we can all agree that all these stupid lawsuits need to stop.

avatar

acidic

i've read that both htc and google will be suing. there is also a chinese company patented the look and specs of the iphone5 and is going to sue crapple if they try to sell it in china. karma is a bitch and best served cold

avatar

TommM

So they slightly increased the screen size and resolution, and as a result will have to run 3rd party apps in windowed mode, making it the same as the old phone.

How dumb is that?? That's progress?

avatar

wolfing

I'm as much an Apple hater as anyone, but really, what would make you go 'wow'? hate the company or not, they did revolutionize the world with the iPhone, but after that it's just incremental. It's always been like that, some company comes with something new, they charge a lot for it because, well, because they can. Then a lot of companies copy and improve, until many years later some other company comes and changes the world again.

I guess the problem with Apple is just that the Apple lemmings treat every incremental iteration as 'revolutionary', so can't blame the company if they're taking advantage of that.

avatar

Baer

The i-Kiddies are excited and you have to admit that Apple did change the expectations of phones but then so did so many other companies in various tech areas who led the pack for a number of years and then were overtaken by others. The wow factor with a new iPhone is not there, except for 14 Y O girls. I think it is time to take some of your Apple stock off the table, if you have any that is.

avatar

tekknyne

You said revolutionize and Apple in the same sentence. LOL.

avatar

henoch

The only thing that Apple really came up with is user friendly UI which
made even most technologically backward person use their device.

So, now we have bunch of morons running around with smartphones, screaming and talking crap like they know what they are doing.

avatar

Biceps

I think that what Apple is good at - in a way no other company is, perhaps with the exception of Google - is taking a wide variety of technologies and putting them into one intuitive and practical package. And of course they charge a ton of money for that, because they are usually at the head of the pack.

Apple innovates in many ways, and has 'revolutionized' the way people interact with their personal devices. You don't become the world's most valuable company by faking it, and you don't become the world's most valuable company by just stealing other people's ideas. The level of collaboration inside Apple and their focus on the customer experience is what has made them successful.

You can hate on Apple all you want for their walled-garden approach, for their patent wars, and so on. But to say they haven't been innovative - you're just deceiving yourself. "You are a snob - it limits you".

FYI, I don't own even one Apple device at the moment, so I'm not some Apple Fanboi, I'm just making observations.

avatar

henoch

Friendly UI is only innovation and combined with aggressive marketing was what made apple successful. "Ahead of the pack" ???? besides UI they always seem to try to catch up.
