iPhone 4 Sets Single Day Sales Record for Apple
Perhaps Apple should send Gizmodo a Thank-You card for helping to hype the hell out of the iPhone 4 weeks before its release, or at the very least call off the dogs and lift the unofficial ban on Gizmodo from Apple-sponsored events. As it turns out, Steve Jobs and company would have bigger concerns with the iPhone 4, like trying to keep up with record-setting orders.
"Yesterday [June 15] Apple and its carrier partners took pre-orders for more than 600,000 of Apple’s new iPhone 4," Apple said in a statement posted to its website yesterday. "It was the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was far higher than we anticipated, resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions. Many customers were turned away or abandoned the process in frustration. We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties, and hope that they will try again or visit an Apple or carrier store once the iPhone 4 is in stock."
According to AT&T, the only wireless vendor in town officially allowed to carry and service Apple's smartphone, pre-order sales for the iPhone 4 were 10 times higher than they were for the first day of pre-ordering for the iPhone 3GS.
"Given this unprecedented demand and our current expectations for our iPhone 4 inventory levels when the device is available June 24, we're suspending pre-ordering today in order to fulfill the orders we've already received," AT&T said.

Wait, wait wait! Didn't Apple PR reps claim Gizmondo cock blocked their sales goal?? I mean, really? The Apple gestapo raided that dudes house with a warrant, and never just asked the poor bastard if he had the phone or not! I have a hard time feeling sorry for Apple when they can't keep up with demand, yet blame Gizmondo for poor sales!

Mr. Lilly was simply reporting on the Apple and ATT press releases. We don't have the resources to do an "instant audit" of exactly how many phones were ordered. I'm not sure anyone does. So rather than go down the path of screaming "You lie!" at Apple/ATT -- because we can't prove otherwise -- we'll just wait until it's time for the REAL referendum: a review of the hardware. All that, plus I personally don't care if Apple sells a million phones in 30 seconds: I don't have any dog in this fight.

I could be wrong but if I remember correctly the Evo had aswome sales recorded, then they came back a few days later and stated that it was an error and they did not sale as much. Found the article...http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/sprint_overstates_firstdays_sales_evo_smartphone...I am willing to bet AT&T will do the same.

So how many of the people who pre-ordered the phone are new customers? I bet at least 80-90 percent of the people who pre-ordered the phone already have an iphone. They just want an upgrade. Now if all the people who pre-ordered the phone never had an iphone then i would be surprised but just because you have repeat customers pre-order the damn thing it don't mean shit. People are just tired of the crappy iphone they have now and just want something better.

Which only further underscores the power of the Cult of Jobs. They already have dealt with 2 years of a crappy phone on a crappy network yet they can't sign up fast enough for another crappy phone and another 2 years of crappy service.
I mean seriously, do all these people have an IQ of 35 or less???

I'm sorry but Droid OS phones will rule the US market in 2 years. With the Droid OS you can modify the OS for different smartphones. With the iphone OS you have to use an Apple smartphone. That's bullshit. Why should I be locked into one manufacter. I like the smartphones with the Droid OS. Sorry Apple your shit sucks and you are behind the times. I like variety when it comes to choosing a smartphone. Right I'm considering an Evo or Motorola Droid. AT&T sucks monkey balls so I feel sorry for the people who have or just bought an iphone. The phone sucks and the wireless carrier sucks. Wow Apple is on a roll with crap. so in 2 years it will be Blackberry based smartphones first, Droid OS smartphones second, then Apple iphone thrid.

Apple,shmapple. Who cares.
I'm more inclined to wonder what all this is going to do to ATT's networks.

600,000? I call bullshit. It is on them to provide proof that that many were sold. But I'm sorry, I don't take Apple's nor AT&T's word for nothing.
EVO...FTW! and apple..just get F'd...

I'm with you. I don't believe anything that Apple or AT&T says when it comes to numbers. I'm sure they use every trick in the book to inflate their figures in an attempt to build hype. Cause y'know if a million people are buying iPhones then I gotta get one too no matter how crappy they are, right?

i wouldn't be surprised if the numbers were right on. on that same note, i wouldn't be surprised if they fuged the numbers. There are enough applets out there to buy up that many of those shiny paper-weights, but i stongly dislike apple and AT&T, so i'm torn.
