iPad Buying Frenzy Continues, Competition Sorely Needed
The number of iPads flooding the market speaks of two things. First, the lack of Flash support and other key features (USB, microSD card slot, multitasking, camera) hasn't hurt Apple nearly as much as some might have anticipated. And secondly, the competition needs to step up to the plate and offer a better tablet, because buyers are obviously out there.
For all of its shortcomings, Apple's iPad is really the only game in town, or at least the only major one. And perhaps largely for that reason, Digitimes Research reports that Apple's monthly iPad orders to Taiwan hardware makers has jumped over the two million units mark for July.
According to Mingchi Kuo, senior analyst for Digitimes Research, this isn't a temporary spike, he fully expects volume to stay above the 2 million per month mark for the foreseeable future. And why not.- if we're to trust Apple's numbers, the Cupertino company managed to sell three million iPads in just 80 days following the product's launch.
This could all change as we head into the latter part of 2010, as several companies have promised to ship tablets in the second half of this year. So far, however, it's been a lot of talk and little action, and even a few cancellations (HP Slate, Microsoft Courier).

I don't own a single thing from Apple, and not gonna buy one 'cause I always prefer to buy things that are never advertized. But it obvious that Apple leads the way, and others just lag behind, always trying to "catch up". So much for IT-industry )))

Everyone is surprised how the tablet market is exploding because the tablets aren't all that useful. That is missing the point, these are not productivity machines after all. They aren't laptop replacements. They are second or third devices used mostly as a convenience. Call them coffee table PCs. They excel at displaying slideshows, quick web referencing and social networking ( I count short e-mails to family in there). I guess it does just enough for most people to keep it. I would check Craigslist and ebay for used models to see if indeed people are tiring of them quickly. One thing about early adopters is that they aren't afraid to resell a device if they don't like it anymore.
Yes, it lacks major features like foreward facing camera, SD slot and USB but they don't outweigh the simplicity and convenience. Max PC editors think of it as not good enough to replace either their smart phone or their laptop nor distinct enough to earn a spot in their backpacks, but as I said its a coffee table PC so it replaces nothing and is distinct enough to lay by the TV. Yeah, it doesn't seem like a good value on productivity but how productive is the iPod? That sells like gangbusters. I think it really complements the laptop as it is easier to use for those easy tasks that aren't worth firing up the laptop. The competition has to come out with a game changer because its hard to unseat the device that defines the category, even of that is by default.

As a Maximum PC Subscriber (OMG, I am backing an Apple product, well, more Maximum PC). If my memory serves me correctly, then, intern editor in chief John Phillips (Hi John!) not only owns an iPad, but likes it. He gave it a rating of 8 out of 10. A good review and great rating. Here it is, July, 2010 the "High Performance Upgrades (At Minimum Cost!" issue, "In the labs" section, page 79. He reviewed the Apple iPad wi-fi 32GB version. It appears they think it worthy enough to print in their magazine, and give it a great review.
Actually, here's the review, http://www.maximumpc.com/article/reviews/apple_ipad_wifi

I'm just saying, the previous post says MaxPC wrote the iPad off so I posted the contrary. I hate the damned thing. I hate Apple, but do feel compelled to defend someone when the opportunity arises despite my beliefs. Mine wasn't a post defending the iPad, but the magazine I love. If anything, Apple's gotten too much love from here lately and the editors have been subjugated due to a vast amount of trolling. I was just performing a civic duty by defending someone. As an appreciated veteran, I am sure you can respect that. I would surely defend you in a similar situation, as you did me in an anti Apple rant I posted previously.

I don't know. Is there really that much demand for tablets or are people just suckers for anything Apple? I don't think even an array of Android tablets with superior hardware and features would sell as well. Apple has managed to make their products fashion accessories and status symbols.\
If there were some other tablets, to me the metric of success wouldn't be the number of units sold but rather how often the owners used the product. I have a feeling that a lot of people are buying these iPads, using them a lot for a week or 2 and then putting them down after the luster has worn off and the lack of utility has set in.

People are suckers for anything Apple. Here's the rub: first off, these number from Apple are shipping volume, not retail sales volume. So we have no idea how many of these things they are actually selling to real people.
Second, it in no way can tell us how many of these things are being bought, played with for a week or two, and then shelved because most people either simply don't need it or expect it to do a lot more than it does.

That's true. But in all honesty, after the hype wears off, what good is it? It is a novelty Item that makes a fashion statement that has the convenience of the internet at a steep price. Only thing you can download is apps from the almighty app store. Can't view your pics unless you have an online account to view them. Can't download and save anything from the net...and back them up. The only thing that hooks up to a PC is a charging cable. Pray to god the batt doesn't go dead while watching a DVD called I,robot cause you can't replace it, especially on a camping trip...OH but if you get lost and have enough charge, you can use the digital compass to get you home.
See where I'm going with this? It's a novelty Item only, Mostley bought by apple fritters because it is apple and SJ told them too. Others buy it for the wow factor only. As soon as that wears off, it will collect more dust than grandmas carpet from the 20's. Newer cell phones can do more than an ipad. So yeah, fritters are suckers for anything apple and I'm sure they sleep with them under their pillow at night for security...because we all know...they are the safest product.
Apple is the company of "NO!" No customizing. No downloading and backing up(the way you choose). No flash. No viruses (my ass). No reception. No free bumpers. No multitasking. No FF camera. The list goes on and on......
