iPad 3G Demand "Stronger than Expected"
Increasing its lead in the tablet market before the competition has yet to even release a competing model, Apple sold about 300,000 iPad 3Gs over the weekend, a number which includes 52 days of preorder sales, says Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster.
That puts the 3G model on par with what the Wi-Fi only model sold during its first day of availability, which included 22 days of preorders. By Sunday afternoon, Munster reports that most of the Apple stores surveyed were sold out of the 3G model, an impressive feat when you consider the pricing premium placed on 3G models compared to their Wi-Fi counterparts.
"As of 3:00PM ET on Sunday afternoon (5/2), 49 of 50 Apple stores we called were completely sold out of the iPad 3G (most were also sold out of Wi-Fi only models," Munster wrote in a Sunday note to clients. "While it is difficult to gauge, we believe this is due to both stronger than expected demand and lower than intended supply on the part of Apple. Near-term, this may put downward pressure on luanch day/weekend statistics, but long-term we see it as positive, as consumers are definitely interested in the iPad as a new category."
Combined with the more 600,000 Wi-Fi models sold at last count, Apple likely has sold over a million iPads in all.

If Apple had done their testing as thoroughly as they should have, they would have realized the problems with the WiFi on the iPad. Plus, when you make a device such as this, you should realize that people would want it to be portable. 3G does this. With WiFi, you can't freely roam with your bloated iPhone and be able to do what you want with it, all you can do is internet lacking things.

Both the local Best Buy's here in Alaska have had plenty of iPad stock since the initial launch, but can't keep a nook on the shelf long enough for me to drive 15 minutes to pick it up. Feh, who needs these swollen iPhones when I've got my freshly jailbroken 3Gs anyway?

Heck, I couldn't even get stable phone service from AT&T, but there's always hope that they work on their 3G network to be more effective for the iPad

I really have to question these numbers. Do we have any way of verifying the validity of Apple's sales claims? As someone else pointed out I have yet to see any writeup, blog, or even a comment as to why anyone actually wants a maxiPad. I find it really hard to believe they've sold a million of them. Sorry, but I call bullshit.

I found all the new feminine products from the evil empire. They are all on ebay.
Well, not ALL of them, but a good amount. And I'm sure there will be more coming.
Gentlemen, never discount the power of the evil empire, its head dictator Steve Jobs, who tells his sheep what to buy and how to use it (its Magical!)

According to a friend of mine, apparently Oprah really likes the iPad as well and gave it the thumbs up about 2 weeks ago...

The appeal is that even a 90 year old granny can figure the thing out. So if you want to browse the internet, here you go granny. For technical people, the iPad will likely seem limited. But does any of that limitation matter when you have Apple marketing? Apparently not. People are suckers for fad products, and apparently they like to be overcharged.

You know, now that I think about it, I've never read a report of some consumers talking about why it is they want the iPad. I just don't get the appeal; it doesn't seem to serve a practical purpose. My dad's an Apple fan and says he would like to browse the internet on it, but you can do that with...almost anything. Most phones do it, even my two-year-old Sony Ericsson w760. Heck, e-readers are getting that feature.
I just don't get it.
