Intel Wants to Put an Atom Processor in Your Android Smartphone
Intel isn't exactly used to playing second fiddle to other chip makers, but in the smartphone market, ARM pretty much reigns supreme. That might be starting to change.
The Santa Clara chip maker today announced it has ported Google's Android mobile OS platform to run on its Atom processor series. Intel claims customers have been asking for this, and the company has plans to extend its Atom architecture beyond Android.
"Intel is enabling all OSes for Atom phones," said Renee James, general manger of Intel's software and services group.
The move will certainly have an interesting impact in the mobile world, as Intel would be going up against some capable ARM-based platforms, including Nvidia's Tegra chipset and Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor.

I'm curious as to how many customers are really asking for this.

Sorry but Winmo7 phones will be out long before Intel puts a chip inside a smartphone. Not long before, but before nonetheless. Besides, I don't want a phone that has a stupid sticker on it that says Intel inside.

YEAH!!! That would just make my day! What would be better though is if they come out with a special 3D phone skin featuring the blue man group dancing around like panzies. :)
I still refuse to buy a phone that has that stupid moniker on the back that say's....with GOOGLE.

This is good news. Just about every smartphone that is out is powered by ARM processors. This will give Intel a good chance to work on this field. They will also get some experience before Windows Phone 7 will come out.
