Intel to Slash Price of Core i7 950 Chip
We're not real big on playing the waiting game when it comes to building, buying, or upgrading a PC, though every once awhile, we can be swayed. This might be one of those times.
According to Chinese website HKEPC, Intel is planning a handful of price cuts this summer, the most compelling of which is headed towards the Core i7 950. Come August 29, Intel will slash the Core i7 950 from $562 all the way down to $294, effectively replacing the Core i7 930, HKEPC says.
For the entry-level crowd, HKEPC reports Intel will cut the price of its Pentium E5500 chip from $75 to $64 in mid-July, while the Celeron E3400 will drop from $53 to $42 in mid-October. Intel is also planning to release several new processors, including the Core i3 560 (3.33GHz, $138, Aug 29), Pentium E6800 (3.33GHz, $86, Aug. 29), and a couple of others.

This morning, Intel has just unveiled its newest mobile processor.
Surprise! Okay, not really. We've heard about this chip for what feels
like ages. Well, today we're gonna tell you how a Core i7 laptop
performs in initial tests.http://www.ebattery.com.au

That is a pretty great deal! Maybe I really will have to put off my build again...but with the extra few months to save now perhaps I can also get a beefier GPU...

According to a Chinese website they are. Ok, I cannot attest to the veracity about their claims, but they claim that Intel is releasing mainstream 3.2Ghz hex cores for $563 in Q3 and that price will drop to $316 in Q4. Obviously this is a reaction to AMD's overwhelming sales success with their hex cores (as well as Intel's preparation of the change in technology for Q1'11). A lot of people (obviously not those in the know) see 6 cores and a low price and get excited regardless of real world performance.

I'd say that is pretty obvious considering the 6 core AMD got its ass handed to it by a 4-core I-7. I am a big proponent of AMD and am glad they are having success. It does seem like they have been on the 45nm for a while, especially for their "Tick, Tock' approach, seems to be a lot of Ticks with no revision Tocks

Yeah, but a lot of those sales could also be coming from folks who were already running an AM3 chip already. If you already had a 9xx part, $200 bucks would get you a performance boost that is fairly close to an i5 750.

Well this makes sense as adding cores only helps you when running multithreaded apps -- which, btw, is the one area where the Phenom spanks the Core.
It's well known that Phenoms are on par with Core2 parts, not Core i parts.

Nice deal for anyone shopping an x58 system, but I'd be more interested if they announced a 32nm 1366 quad or hexa core at a reasonable price.
