Intel Puts Several Processors on the Chopping Block
As we head into the back-to-school and holiday shopping seasons, Intel has begun shedding old parts and making room for the new. Already in the second quarter, the world's largest chip maker issued end-of-life (EOL) and product discontinuance notices (PDN) for several processors, including the popular Core i7 920 (EOL), Core 2 Quad Q8200/Q8200S (EOL), Pentium E5200 (EOL), Pentium E6300 (EOL), and Core 2 Quad 9300 (PDN).
In addition, several other chips will face the guillotine in the second half of 2010. Most notably are Intel's Atom 330 and 220 processors, but the chip maker will also issue EOL for several older Celeron, Core i, and Core 2 processors, Digitimes reports.
The mass murder of older chips is to make room for Intel's upcoming Sandy Bridge platform and 6-core desktop chips. Other than the ultra-pricey Core i7 980X Extreme Edition, Intel's presence in the six-core arena is perhaps overshadowed by AMD, which offers several lower-cost hexa-core parts, albeit built around a weaker microarchitecture than Intel's.
