Intel Processor Market Share Balloons to 80 Percent

The rich get richer, so the saying goes, and it applies to Intel's x86 CPU business. Already the No.1 CPU maker in the world, Intel's x86 processor market share rose to 80.5 percent in the second quarter of 2009, up from 78.2 percent in the first quarter.
According to market research firm Mercury Research, Intel's recent market share growth is attributable to the chip maker's aggressive desktop CPU price cuts, as well as increased inventory alleviating continued shortages in certain segments.
Meanwhile, competitor AMD saw its shares drop from 20.9 percent in the first quarter to 18.7 percent in the second, a trend the No. 2 chip maker can't be happy about. It was almost a year ago that AMD announced a split into separate design and manufacturing firms.
VIA's market share remained relatively unchanged, claiming just under 1 percent for the second consecutive quarter.

dont get me wrong, i really like intel but they need a little less market share :)
i wonder when soeone will make an 86 bit processor, 64 bit proc's have been around for what 30 years? time for new innovation
The next higher "bit"

The next higher "bit" processors will not be 86. It will be 128. In the computer world it goes by binary. 0 1 2 4 8 16 32 64 128 256, and so on. It doubles each time. Oh and 64-bit has no way been around for 30 years. Its just catching on outside the server world. Its going to be a while till anything better comes out.
Anyone think that Intel

Anyone think that Intel will try and buy AMD at some point?

I doubt the government would allow that purchase.

If Intel gets to over 95% market share, they'll just be pumping out Atoms for the next 3 decades.
Another reason why AMD must not fail.

I smell anti-trust cases in the near future.

Why? Becuase they have a large market share? Is there anyone that has a clue what they are talking about with this kind of stuff? Intel has to do something that prevents AMD from doing business. Unless they come out with some kind of technology that makes it impossible to use an AMD process in a computer, they have done nothing wrong.
Well Microsoft technically

Well Microsoft technically did nothing wrong, and look where it was 9 years back, and now even.
