Intel Dragging its Feet with USB 3.0 Support
With companies like Asus and Gigabyte all gung-ho to push USB 3.0 into every household, you'd expect the new spec would have an easy time marching into the mainstream. Unfortunately, that isn't the case, and you're not likely to see USB 3.0 become widespread until the tail end of 2011. The reason? No direct support from Intel.
"The real sweet spot of a new version of USB comes when it is integrated into the chipset of the PC," said Brian O'Rourke, an analyst at In-Stat. "That's when USB becomes mainstream. By integrating it into the its chipsets, Intel essentially allows PC OEMs to offer that new flavor of USB for free.
But according to O-Rourke, Intel isn't expected to do this until late 2011. Whether or not that's really the time line, Intel won't say, but at least one analyst believes that USB 3.0 just isn't a priority for Intel.
"USB 2.0 is doing a pretty good job for most people," according to Brookwood. And what about HD camcorders and HD digital cameras, which can benefit from the extra transfer speed that USB 3.0 offers? "Those people are typically willing to pay a premium for high-end systems that have USB 3.0."

I would think it would come out Q1, 2011, with X68, LGA 1356, and Sandy Bridge. To me, that seems like the most logical time to add it, along with SATA 6 support.

I think what everyone needs to realize that the raeson Intel isn't pushing its support out for 3.0 quite yet is because there aren't many devices that take advantage of of USB 3.0. Not to mention that there aren't too many motherboards that currently support it, nor will there be for awhile to come. A early to mid 2011 support by Intel for 3.0 is pretty damned good.

USB 3 is backwards compatible with the other three USB standards 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0. Intel is dragging it's feet because it doesn't want to pay a license fee for the technology or something like that. With full support for USB 3 on all new motherboards the products will start falling into place by the hundreds and thousands like the USB 2 did.

its always a chicken and an egg problem but the chipset support needs to come first... only then will you see a ton of devices that run on usb 3... and saying there isn't a need for it now is complete BS... one would see a ten fold difference between connecting an external drive via usb 2 vs usb 3

There IS barely a need for it now because not too many devices take
advantage of 3.0.

WHAT? And you call yourself a Jedi? Yoda would slap you for that. Look at the benefits it has with external back up HDD's. Imagine an external BD burner that is actually fast. USB 3 kicks some serious ass and we need it yesterday. USB should have started at USB 3. Imagine the computing world today if USB 3 had come out in 1990.

I am not saying that the new USB tech. is a bad thing, no. I understand its potential.

Thats what happens when you have a monopoly... Intel is finally starting to act like @sshole by doing whatever it wants to... wake up AMD....
