Intel to Cut Chip Prices Soon

comment Commentsprint Printemail EmailDeliciousDiggStumbleUponRedditFacebookSlashdot

It looks like Intel’s pricing on their lower-end quad-core processors will be reportedly going down on January 18th. This comes in the wake of AMD’s latest 45-nm Phenom II and Shanghai Opteron chips.

AMD’s newest quad-core beast, the Phenom II Dragon processor has been garnering some pretty high acclaim as of late. Its even being featured in servers by Hewlett-Packard, Sun, Dell, IBM and Fujitsu.

The cuts are expected to be on only the quad-core processors, but it’s still very much a possibility that other chips could receive cuts.

avatarThe cycle

It's ineveitable, yet it's never for the things I want. It's not enough to wish for them to drop prices on their new line.....

Or some mobo vendors at least make budget boards.

avatarIntel certainly had a reason

Intel certainly had a reason to leave costs on the higher end before AMD rolled out their updated Phenom, but there is also the reason to clear stock so that the I7 will be the more likely choice for new builds.  However, as  I'm still running a socket 775, I look forward to some lower chip prices for a backup PC or two...

avatarThere are rumors that a cut

There are rumors that a cut of 15-40% for quad-core CPUs and 13% for dual-core CPUs are in the mix. This would coincide with Intel rolling out a new 65W Core 2 Quad 8200S (priced at $245), 9400S ($320), and 9550S ($369) parts on the 18th, along with price cuts to the Core 2 Quad Q8200 and Duo E7400 priced at $183 and $113 respectively.

avatarI'm hoping the dual cores

I'm hoping the dual cores get slashed as well. I'd love to get a cheap-er E8500
