Intel Adopting Android for Future Tablets
Tucked away in the minutiae of Intel's recent earnings call, were some details of the chips maker's upcoming tablet plans. Intel had been working closely with Nokia on MeeGo. Now that the Finnish company is focusing on Windows Phone 7, Intel is looking to branch out. The platform they're looking to latch onto next is Google's Android operating system.
Intel said that Google has already delivered them the Honeycomb (Android 3.0) source code. This is notable because the Honeycomb code is not open sourced yet. Intel would have to enter into an agreement with Google to even get their hands on it. If Intel is to be believed, we should be seeing the Android operating system running on Intel hardware in the next year.
The long wait is likely because Android is designed to run on ARM chips, not the x86 silicon Intel makes. Time will tell if Intel's Android port is worth the wait. How do you think it's going to go?
