Infinity Ward Explains IWNet, Attempts to Quell Gamer Rage

comment Commentsprint Printemail EmailDeliciousDiggStumbleUponRedditFacebookSlashdot

Not too keen on Infinity Ward’s announcement that dedicated servers won’t be supported by Modern Warfare 2? Well, you’re not the only one. But wait! Before you go back to boycotting the game as hard as you can, consider the following:

“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is actually the biggest investment Infinity Ward has ever made into the PC version of our games. It’s also the most feature-rich PC version we’ve ever made. IWNET takes the benefits of dedicated servers and allows them to be utilized and accessed by every player, out of the box, while removing the barrier to entry for players unaware of how to maintain a server on their own,” said Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling.

“With IWNET matchmaking, it takes all that into account for you. All you have to do is select the playlist (pre-set gametypes with custom rules) that fits the style of play you are in the mood for. When you do, it will automatically find you a game with the best performance, ping, and preferences based on your location and individual connection as well as matching you with players of your same SKILL.”

He also explained that aim-bots, wallhacks, and other species of cheater will be all but eradicated by Valve’s anti-cheat system.

Definitely click through the link and check out Robert Bowling’s full post on the subject. If nothing else, it shows that Infinity Ward's heart is in the right place -- even if its methods leave something to be desired.

avatar$60 is too much, and just make dedicated servers an option...

Why does a downloadable PC game cost as much as a brand new console game now while we're in the midst of the worst recession of our lives?

I understand why console games cost more... Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo want to get paid for providing the platform... but that's not the case with PC games at all.  I also understand that packaging physical media and buying shelf space at a Best Buy or Gamestop costs money too, so I understand charging more for that.

What I don't get, is how a PC game I buy on STEAM costs just as much as the boxed 360/PS3/Wii copy someone else buys at Best Buy or Gamestop?!?  Why?  I know Valve needs to get paid for providing the digital contenty delivery infrastructure, but does that really cost as much as everything else that goes into the console games?  That's a no-brainer... it doesn't.  That's why every other brand new, AAA quality PC game I can buy on STEAM costs anywhere from $10 to $25 LESS than the brand new console games.  Yet here comes Activision, providing a gaming experience which, based on the price premium, must only be compared to the second coming of Christ in terms of overall significance to gamer kind.

It's just plain arrogance... especially when you factor in the fact that Activision is essentially taking away one of the primary distinguishing factors between console and PC games... the ability to create and administer your own dedicated servers so you can play the game how and with whom you choose.

I really don't care what the excuses are that Activision spews out from now on, there's nothing that makes it palatable at this point.  If you REALLY care so much about providing gamers with the "perfect" matchmaking scenario by using a proprietary network to host games... fine.  But every other game in the genre, especially the ones in your own franchise, have ALL had the ability to create dedicated servers... why is that not at least an OPTION now?!  Why can't you provide both solutions and make everyone happy?

avatarWell for one, its more

Well for one, its more expensive to develop a PC game than a console.  You have to provide for different graphic resolutions, sound card differences, types of CPU's.  All those things are a given with a console but not all PC's are created equal and you still have to provide a good game experience for a good portion of them to be profitable.

That being said I'm still a little leary of the whole match making system.  What if I want to play with some friends who are not all the same level/calibur?

avatar$60 for this?

Play Team Fortress 2. It's cheaper.  It's more fun.

I just don't understand how people can pay $60 for a download on Steam.  Since when did PC games start costing as much as their XBOX/PS3 counterparts?

avatarWe're too smart ...

... and they (IW) just want to dumb us down.  COD4 was the best PC game I've ever played because of the ability to CHOOSE where I wanted to play.  FREEDOM!!!  But, if this is the future of multiplayer gaming, where I can't set up my own server and just play with/against people of my choosing, then I won't be in this for too much longer.  I was looking forward to Starcraft II but they are employing the same kind of crap by disallowing LAN games.  Its the same issue:  the choice is being taken away of who I want to play with/against.

avatarThe old saying........

............ "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". CoD4 made it in the record books for the game that it was. This is taking away from that and going a large step backwards.

avatarYou know what  IW?? I think

You know what  IW?? I think I will only pirate the game for the single player campaign and continue to play COD4. I quited the xbox because I could choose the server I wanted to play on the PC.

avatarGood

First of all, I don’t think they are saying PC gamers are not intelligent enough to run a server...a child could do it, and they know the differences between the PC gamer audience and the console audience. But they are aware of many of the problems that plague the current rent a server system. Although I like the ability of choosing from different servers, without being forcefully "matched", this will eliminate some of the reasons I left MW1 and BF2, too many kids on power trips with god-like complex running ranked servers, cheating, rage kicking when they die, and stat padding/special rules. Not having to deal with this alone is worth it for me.
I really do hope they don’t do an X-Box-like matching system where you join a random game, I like seeing servers running different maps and occupancy and join what I want, sometimes i join servers with few players and others depending on the class i feel like playing ill join a more full one.

Just my two cents...

avatarwhatever

IW is covering there @$$ with this,  vac really isnt that secure for one, And the way they have this setup is most likely going to have a P2P setup and there will alot of lag. IW i doubt has the servers setup for this as it will take alof of virtuaizing and they rushed the game so i know they dont have the servers.

Why they hell would we want to play with the same people of our own skill, how the hell do you get better, the whole point of play is to play with friends and clan members, I for one am glad i canceled my pre-order and await for DICE

avatarYou can't do P2P with FPS

You can't do P2P with FPS games.  There is just no way to make it fair.  besides thatwould require a virtual server on the host PC, which is exactly what they are trying to avoid.

avatarWhat about custom servers?

Does this mean that this marks the end of custom servers?

I always enjoyed picking a 24/7 crossfire server on MW1 (every time I type that, or worse, MW2, I see MEchwarrior) for practice.

avatarWow....

This is nuts. It's gonna be real interesting to see how this plays out. I'm very curious to see the financial hit IW is gonna take over this. I'm still going through with my preorder just because I wanna see how the game is. I think it'll be better than nothing. BUT... who knows. Either way, IW is gonna have to do SOMETHING if they ever want to get their loyal PC fans back.

avatarAll I hear from IW's mouth

All I hear from IW's mouth is BS, euphemisms and lies. Their hearts are in the right place? is this the same place as Activisions CEO?

PC gamers are stupid and we don't want them to have to deal with the complicated tasks of finding and joing dedicated servers.

Are you kidding me? We are not console gamers, we don't need dumbed down "features" because we are too stupid to comprehend how to maintain a server.

avatargood

You know what I'm fine with it.  You know why, well the reason I stopped playing MW1 was b/c it got to be difficult to get a decent server.  I'm not talking quantity of servers, their were plenty.  The rules that were set up were ridiculous.  You know I got kicked once b/c I was jumping... JUMPING!  The reason why?... b/c Jumping alows you to dodge bullets.  Thats the answerer I got from the admin.  Well no shit I don't want to die.  If your better then me then i'm gonna die, if i'm better then you then I get the kill.  I'm ok with that and if I die I will have an person that I will be looking for until I'm just as good.

If you don't like what I'm saying, if you don't like my spelling or grammar, if you do not agree with my opinion, or disagree with me on a technical aspect then fine. I don't care.
