It is great that India is telling big businesses to censor up or shut up. FaceBook has become such a filthy place of lies. If FaceBook wants to keep 25 million subscribers, they better do what their great nation demands of them to do.

avatar

Ghok

I'm not sure about India, but many countries have laws to protect against libel. In some cases, these laws have struggled in adjusting to the internet age, but they do exist, and hopefully can be used the way they're meant to be. If someone publishes a lie about you in an attempt to discredit or hurt you, you can take legal action.

If Facebook has become a place of lies, that's only because it's full of PEOPLE who lie. Maybe we should just all learn to ignore a lot of what we see online, or at least just see if for what it really is - crap spewed by people who might not know what the hell they are talking about (myself included).

Surely those are better options than having someone sitting in an office looking through everything everyone ever does online, and then deleting the stuff they don't like. Have you even thought about how oppressive that is?

I do agree with you that we live in a society where big business has too much power. But in this circumstance, the big business isn't actually DOING anything wrong. At best you could try to argue that sites like YouTube or Yahoo (which are full of garbage comments) should take some more responsibility, as they have to know how much garbage exists. I'd probably even agree with that one. I just don't think any kind of "censorship" by the government is the answer.  I am a big fan of government regulation where appropriate, but when it comes to freedom of speech? No way.

avatar

win7fanboi

Not saying I agree but from what I have heard their justice system is already overburdened. people die before cases are even heard in their lifetime. I don't think people suing each other is the answer. And they don't want to censor speech, that is why they are asking facebook to make sure their members post comments responsibly. Even free sites that have forums have moderators...

Yep, she's serious. She has an interesting worldview.

Knowing Holly, she's 100% serious.

I guess I'm sort-of wondering how it's such a "great nation" when they sanction the caste system (and the idea that certain people are just born scum and condemned to a life of literally working in sewers and such.)

...just my thoughts, I guess.

avatar

win7fanboi

Same way our "great nation" had klu klux clan, slavery, etc... if you stop watching reruns from 17th century you might actually understand a smidgen of truth. If I had to guess I bet you haven't even gotten your passport yet.

Oh, and don't kid yourself in thinking just because majority voters elected a racially diverse president we have eradicated racism. Far from it, it took years after slavery was abolished for a black president to get appointed.

avatar

Engelsstaub

Don't guess anything about me...or assume that I'm even a natural-born US citizen. How would I be watching reruns from the 17th century??

I wasn't kidding myself about anything regarding the States. I'm honestly wondering what your comment had to do with anything I said.

avatar

win7fanboi

Let me connect the dots... I think it is hypocrite to criticize one nation's past without looking at your own. And if you had ever been there in the last 50 years, you would know that it is not the case anymore. There might be some rural areas that national geographic showcases on travel channels that still has some vestiges of this but it's not the norm. On the flip side it has other things going for it like not invading any other country (for oil or revenge) in the last 200 years. With neighbors like Pakistan, China, Bangladesh, etc. it's not an easy feat I imagine.

avatar

Engelsstaub

I do criticize my nation. This article was not about my nation's past...or yours. OTBS?

Regarding the past, see the link below. Or just read anything.

avatar

win7fanboi

I do criticize my nation. - So why attack another country? Unless you get some perverse pleasure out of criticizing anything and everything. None of your posts on this article has mentioned Facebook once!

avatar

Engelsstaub

FACEBOOK!

avatar

Holly Golightly

Amen brother. You checkmated him big time!!! Anyhow, you are right, they are not at war for revenge or oil. Typically they are very peaceful people. Yes, India does have poor people... But doesn't America have poor people too? What are these ghettos I keep hearing of? Places like Harlem and Flint are definitely not the hotest spots to be at right now. Problem is, some people here are blindy patriotic. I say they are idiotic! At least India has a democracy. Anyhow, this is the same guy who goes on Maximum PC and encouraging people to use Macs instead. I do not know why this guy is even in here.

avatar

Engelsstaub

Yeah, checkmate!  :P Nothing you two have said here has anything to do with the fact that, in the 21st century, Indian citizens are still born into "classes" in which the only jobs they can obtain is washing the blood out of hospital laundry and cleaning human waste.

...and nothing in this article, or anything I said, had anything to do with US foreign policy.

Stop trying to pick an off-topic cyberfight with someone because you're both presumably ass-hurt about comments here in the past. ...as though I'm the only one here who made such a comment.

I give less than two-thirds of a crap about your political rhetoric, Holly. I never told anyone here to use a Mac, but this is what this is really about with you and "Win7FanBoy," isn't it? Pathetic. You come on here and call people homophobic slurs and argue ferociously with anyone regardless of any computers they own. I'm here because I'm also a PC user and I feel like it. I don't care if you think I belong to your imaginary cyberclub or not.

Here's a link to get you two started. http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0306/feature1/

Couple of articles and you are an expert! Yay for you. While not acknowledging the asinine practices in your country where ever that is you prove my point for being a hypocrite.

Nothing constructive every comes out of your mouth and it will take you eons for you to broaden your horizon enough to have a civilized chat with rest of the population.

And since you don't want to get off topic, here's some food for thought. Even free forums have moderators, while facebook make a $hit load of cash and people worry about how hard it would be to filter offensive comments.

In asian culture when you sully someone's honor or call someone's wife names, it is not unusual for people to react violently. Good or bad, there are cultural differences. Just like Google had to pull out of China, Facebook can choose to do so. If they don't do that and make money off of citizen of other nations, they should be sensitive to their cultural differences.

The first line of the NG article begins with : Discrimination against India's lowest Hindu castes is technically illegal.

Come back to me after you have finished your therapy sessions and gain ability to control yourself from writing stuff just for the sake of being offensive.

"Nothing constructive every comes out of your mouth and it will take you eons for you to broaden your horizon enough to have a civilized chat with rest of the population." You respond to a simple opinion with this: "If I had to guess I bet you haven't even gotten your passport yet."

...being a troll. Acting as if you know someone based on an initial comment. Thinking you know what literally comes out of there mouths at all times. I want to play too: Sounds like you're seriously deluded. Or lonely. Or both.

I wish this was a "forum" and had moderators because none of us would feel the need to come back here and read stupid comments from people who just want to hurl insults.

But it's not a forum. And that's why all of the assholes troll it up with stupid cyber-arguments.

You read the first line and are back to hurl insults. Nice deduction. "Caste discrimination is technically illegal." Get your fucking passport you were talking about earlier and see if any of the untouchables are doing anything but cleaning human waste or bloody laundry. You do it. "It's just like here in the US!"

Blah blah blah therapy sessions blah blah blah. (Arguing with children.) Where's your expertise on this matter? Provide me with some of the injustices you face in the US that are even remotely similar to that of Untouchables.

I've read far more than two articles. I know facts aren't too important to you, but I can be back here every day if you just want to argue and call people names. Good times.

You remain Dead. F__king. Wrong. "There might be some rural areas that national geographic showcases on travel channels that still has some vestiges of this but it's not the norm." When I debunked that ignorant BS you replied with a bunch of garbage about "you read two articles so now you're an expert." Dead. Wrong. But flame on.

avatar

Holly Golightly

Just shut up and learn for once. This guy just gave you some news that can help you better understand your own country. Gosh, all you do is keep crying like a little cry baby! You wonder why people are against you on this site? Maybe it is because you insult other people's countries and then talk about your pro mac garbage on a PC website. You put yourself in this situation. Hey, if you love forums so much, then why not just go to one and stop bothering people here? Maybe they will ban your right to free speech too?

Provide me with some of the injustices you face in the US that are even remotely similar to that of Untouchables.

Pick a topic, any topic - sex slavery, spousal abuse, child abuse, mistreatment of illegal immigrants, shipping suspected terrorists (without due process) to guantanomo, torturing (water-boarding, demeaning, etc) of prisoners there, on and on.

Someone who really didn't have a choice -

And if you think none of the other topics are endemic, let me know so I can do a quick google search on your behalf and provide you with some links.

I'll agree with the waterboarding. This isn't a widespread issue effecting a large segment of America's population, but I'll buy that. I've worked in a military correctional facility in the past and yet I don't believe waterboarding is ever necessary, effective, or ever morally right.

All your links were about sex-trafficking in the US. This is a dire problem in need of solutions. It's far more common in eastern Europe and other countries. The US seems to investigate and prosecute such acts with due vigilance (as should and do many other nations.) Moreover the US legal definition of child porn is very strict in that a child can be full-clothed and alone in a picture and still be considered CP in many instances. The US has a problem that everyone else has and IMO does a pretty good job from the law enforcement/investigative side of it. IMO.This isn't equivalent to the Indian government's blind-eye to the injustices of an entire segment of its Hindu population. The US isn't ignoring this problem. If you believe they are read your local paper. Every week they are putting someone away in connection with CP or related offenses against children.

I appreciate that you are willing to have a civil discourse (hopefully/at least here) now. I'd be happy to continue this with you as long as you don't tire me with insults or leave multiple comments anymore. I"m interested, but not in Holly's nonsensical and illogical OT propaganda. I know she can read she just chooses not to and believes exactly as she will. I refrained from calling her the fruit loop she is until now, as everyone else has. Shit, her initial comment was immediately responded to twice with such observations. I'm just wasting my time there. I could have a far more intelligent conversation with someone less than half her age.

I do not feel the need to qualify my every criticism of another nation with one of America unless it's on-topic. Nor should you...that isn't logical at all. I'm not a hypocrite in that sense.

avatar

win7fanboi

No arguing that america has fewer issues than many other developing nations. but the gap is closing and for a young nation with a fraction of the population compared to country like India it's still disconcerting. I read in one of the articles that the number of people forced into sex slavery is about 50,000. While that doesn't seem like a big #, compared to 311 million people in usa, india has 1.21 billion people. The challenges that come with that big population are many and it's not that indian justice only choose to ignore this one issue. There are plethora of issues that the justice system fail to address/enforce. Here is some info on the 'caste' issue : The indian govt. had rules in place to help the untouchables gain education by having 'quotas' in schools, colleges, etc. It is far easier for an untouchable to gain admission in to higher education institutions than it is for others. There is fierce competition due to the immense population in india and this is a big deal. I watched a movie recently called Aarakshan. since you are interested in this topic you may want to watch it. You keep insisting that your posts are on topic even though your criticism and comments had nothing to do with the moderating facebook.

avatar

Engelsstaub

You're right: I was not completely on-topic. My initial response was just meant to (gently, at first) counter a "usual suspect's" rhetorical nonsense with a speck of balance. I was essentially saying that India has its problems (as does many a nation) that seem to make the pursuit of Facebook censorship a rather moot point (IMO.)

I will watch the movie Aarakshan. Thanks for the tip.

Weak comeback... You know, in America... People are born into classes too. Racial discrimination is still around believe it or not. Forbes Magazine is still over 95% white. Harvard is still mostly dominated by wealthy white males who got in by connections. Let's not forget how most women are still below the glass ceiling. Men still get paid more than women and still get promoted far faster. Not everybody in America get's a 50/50 chance. Everybody on Maximum PC knows you are a proud Apple user who is will defend Apple till death. Nobody cares about your Apple iProdu¢ts. We are PC users, and you are litering this site with your pro-mac BS. There is always Mac Life. Why wont you bother people there. As far as Indian culture, hey... At least they are not fighting pointless wars. Take that!

avatar

Engelsstaub

NOTHING I SAID ON THIS ARTICLE WAS ABOUT AMERICA OR APPLE COMPUTERS. Either you can't/don't read my comments or you're just being a troll in search  of an off-topic fight.

My family is not American and I am no spokesman for US policy. I don't like the stupid wars American engages itself in either. I just haven't made MPC a soapbox for my off-topic anti-American opinions. None of the "examples of injustice" you provided are even remotely on par with being born into a caste where the only jobs you get are cleaning human shit and bloody laundry.

...and now you speak for everyone here as though 99% don't think you're a semi-coherent fecking loony-toon.  I don't care who uses what hardware. I'm not some deluded kid who thinks my product decisions define me as a person or believes in some imaginary war between one set of geeks vs. the other. I don't think they care about the fact that some commenter uses a Mac and multiple PCs as much as they do your ridiculous daily rants which you are mocked and ridiculed for with equal frequency.

STFU. I wasn't the only person who commented here.

avatar

win7fanboi

I like how you distance yourself from your country of origin by saying "My family is not American". While at the same time not mentioning where you are from nor acknowledging messed up stuff going on in this country. We were talking about the guy who got 14 years in prison for video taping police just yesterday! On how they are trying to pass laws that will cripple the internet and in effect create a Great Firewall of America. My shit is shit while yours is gold nuggets? People pick on you because everything you say is off base and offensive without adding any value to the conversation.

Looking at your profile page where you proudly post: Been having this nightmare: Standing on a big rock w/ a bunch of stupid ppl speeding around a huge ball of burning gas. I wish I'd wake up.

Get some help dude... seriously.

avatar

Engelsstaub

You couldn't just leave one comment today? Really?? You had to reply for Holly too? You're just going to inundate me with your bullshit?

Thanks for reiterating something I posted publicly. Nobody could read my attempt at humor without your sleuthing abilities. "Need trollbait! Wish I could find out some more about this guy so I can troll it up against him. Let's see what he's publicly put on his profile...that's not funny, it's psychotic! Ha...if I could only get him to tell me where his family is from I could troll about genocide! (I'm not obsessed...really!")

The number of comments you post will surely solve this. Tomorrow make it three. And if staff again answers something for themselves, please keep posting for them as well.

I"ve acknowledged where I was from in the past. Every post of mine need not be autobiographical or provide you with troll-bait. Every nation indeed has its problems. I was only here speaking of India's (on-topic.) Elsewhere I spoke of America's (on-topic.) Elsewhere I spoke of Iran's (on-topic.)

You want to know what I think of America off-topic? OK, cops have too much authority. Their lives are valued more than women's or children's. Even the police dog has more value in court because of the badge and the Blue Wall of Silence and Fraternity. There you go...that one's from the heart. Also the World Police-thing. Hate that. The UN should be doing their job but often don't. It still gives America no excuse to act like they need to police the world.

If you think you know someone because of the comments they post here then we can carpool to therapy.

avatar

win7fanboi

.. love it :) ... wish there was an option to follow a member on this site 'cause you are insanely interesting (or vice a verse)...

avatar

Engelsstaub

I was wrong. You were somehow absolutely right about how the treatment of Untouchables is inconsequential now in India. Absolutely right.

And from now on I promise to qualify any criticism of other countries with criticism of every nation, including yours, even if it's completely off-topic. Then I won't be a hypocrite.

Thanks for setting this all straight.

avatar

Holly Golightly

Maybe I will stop when YOU stfu! How about that?

You sure are quick to hate countries that you are not from... Whoever you are. Nobody is being forced to clean a sewer over there. Unless someone places a shotgun to their head, than I will agree with you. There are plenty of choices in India. That includes doing absolutely nothing. As for who is being mocked and ridiciuled... Ha! It is you, whatever the hell you are. Everyone here knows you spead your love for macs on a PC website. Maybe you get a kick by being everyone's enemy or something? Either way, stop bashing countries you are not even from. I don't care what you think of me, the fact is nobody cares how many macs or what year/model you have. We love PCs and like to talk about PCs. If you promote anything Apple, then you are destined to be poked fun at and viewed as the enemy. Now STFU and stick to the topics, MacBoy.

avatar

Engelsstaub

"Wow!" You're right, Selena. I was off-topic. This was about Macs and America, or more specifically NY (where you live.)

I'm also sorry you're trapped there "living on a (27 year old) woman's wages that aren't the same as a man's." (That is exactly like the caste system.) Praise China on other articles, where women are obviously valued as much as men. When are you moving to Russia where everythng's fair for women?  "The Untouchables have the choice to do nothing!" You aren't really that stupid...it's me. They can clean shit or starve...you do it, O' Persecuted One. I wish that was your "choice" for just one week. If someone was holding shotguns to the Untouchables heads, you'd still be back to argue about Macs and America and other OT lunacy.

You missed those comments up there where people were taliking about what a loony-toon you are. That's ok. It's about me and Apple and America.

I'm sorry. As long as you're just calling people names, like a mature twenty-seven year old, why don't you trot out that crap about "fags" again? That way we can get this comment-section shit-canned the way you did that other one! "Wow!"

avatar

Holly Golightly

Well, since you are being schooled by winfanboy, I felt bad further insulting your lack of intelligence. LMAO, I am just laughing how weak your comebacks are. You got schooled... Plain and simple!

I do not care what they say, my target right now is the mac boy... Which is you! Stop bashing countries you have never visited. Gosh, you are just as one sided as Fox News.

If I were born to a position I did not want... Then I would choose a life of crime than to make the mac boys like yourself ever happy. Clean your own filth!

You just can't stand the fact that Communist China and Socialist India are the future hegemonic powers of the world economy. Take that!!!

avatar

Engelsstaub

Take that, wow, "socialist India" (WTF??,) Wow. In your face, Macboy.

You're a f__king nutjob. I saw the video of you babbling incoherently, laughed out loud like everyone else, but (until now) refrained from calling you the nutjob that you are.

Please don't forget the homophobic hate-speech in your final reply that I won't be reading. Take that. Wow. You know in America... Gosh, wow.

avatar

Holly Golightly

Apparently you have never heard of India's third way. Seems that you know all of the bad stuff about India and none of the good stuff. You just proved my point of just how 1-sided you are.

avatar

Gezzer

Yeah India's got some messed up concepts. The one that really got me was when I heard that one of the kids in the movie Slumdog had to have his faimily's tin shack moved due to flooding. WTF?!? The movie did pretty good sales wise and one of the major players still lives in a tin shack?

As for the current request. Like a lot of places with f@cked up systems their looking over at Syria, then remembering Libia, Egypt, and Tunisia and going "Well we better prevent that happing here.". Of course none of the idiots understand it's not as easy as it sounds. If the people are p@ssed off enough it'll happen. They still want to protect their corrupt system because they benifit from it, and because their so used to getting what they want they come up with ridiculously impossible demands.

avatar

Wingzero_x

Well of course he does, and why? Because we all know the people they would get to do such an endevour would come from a place where they could get the cheapest labor! So Mr Sibel, how about instead of worrying about what a total strangers opinion is, why not ensure your people have a living wage, good shelter, access to roads, and an infrastructure.

avatar

Biceps

Dear Mr. Sibal:

Please censor India's internet yourself - don't ask companies who provide your country with a free service (internet search, email, etc, etc,) to do it for you.  And try having the gov't in your country do a better job - the criticism you and the rest of the Indian gov't are facing is because the gov't is highly corrupt and inefficient.

avatar

CaptainFabulous

Exactly. If he wants the Internet censored, then let HIM censor it in his country, and foot the bill for doing so. This way not only does he pay but he also has 100% accountability.
