IE8 Gains Minimal Market Share After Official Launch

comment Commentsprint Printemail EmailDeliciousDiggStumbleUponRedditFacebookSlashdot

Microsoft used last week's MIX09 conference to officially launch Internet Explorer 8, but without the fanfare Mozilla's Firefox 3 received when the open-source browser set a Guinness World Record for most downloads in a 24-hour period following its release.

But while IE8 didn't manage to set any new records, it did boost the browser's market share a tad. Nothing to get excited over, IE8's average market share increased from 1.34 percent from the day before its official launch to 1.45 percent on the day of release. To be fair, market share peaked slightly higher at 1.86 percent and now stands at 1.7 percent.

For the sake of comparison, Google Chrome 1.0 only gained about 0.1 percentage points next to IE8's .52 percentage points gain on day of release. Firefox 3, meanwhile, gained .66 points on the first day and 3.51 points over a two-day period.

avatarFor what I use the internet

For what I use the internet for, IE8 just doesn't do anything at all better than Firefox nor is it as customizible. I've been sticking with Mozilla for the past 3 years and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Running FF 3.0.7 on a Intel Core 2 Duo 2.26Ghz, 4GB DDR3, GeForce 9800 GTS 512mb, Vista 64 SP1 system. Never had any troubles or misgivings.

avatarInstalled it and ran it for

Installed it and ran it for about 5 minutes... long enough to realize.. yeah it's a bit faster... but is speed enough to make me switch back to a browser that's been far beyond inferior for years? not a chance. Like someone said above... users have been in Microshaft's ear for years about IE and how prehistoric it is. They wait til 09 to fix it? I watched the video also.. dude was super hyped about IE being able to display a green box when another browser couldn't.. whoopty do. Did they fix the box model? Does it treat floats correctly? These are the things I want to know but I'm not willing to spend enough time in the browser to find out for myself. I treat IE like a virus as I'm sure many other people do. Stay as far away from it as possible. or maybe that's just me.

avatarMicrosoft's Dismal Failure On Anything Other than the OS

I'm hard pressed to come up with any example in all the innumerable markets Microsoft has entered, launched products that have earned it any considerable market share, one in which its products merited preference based on engineering prowess, technological superiority alone. Microsoft's overall record in endeavors outside of its core business is dismal.  IE only enjoys its alarmingly hemorrhaging predominance among browsers only as vestige of the wholly monopolistic predatorial instinct of the bygone Bill Gates era.

The fact is, there's nothing Microsoft could possibly do to stanch the erosion of IE's market share because in the face of true, genuine competion, in an evenly matched arena, where the best product wins, Microsoft will always be also-ran.

avatarBah!

I downloaded it, have not used it again since my test run. Just has a bad reputation I guess, I'll stick with Opera of FireFox.

avatarWhen will Microsoft learn...

IE8 is not any better than any other version of IE. When Microsoft gets out of the "surf the web OUR way" atittude and adopts the "surf YOUR way" atittude, then maybe IE will be a relevant browser again.

I would only upgrade to it if it offered better security performane against bad shit. Otherwise, no, not really. I only use my Internet Explorer for a few things because Firefox can't do it... yet..

avatarI will notuse IE8. It's

I will notuse IE8. It's poorly made, and crashes when I try to login to a Microsoft Exchange Server...and crashes some programs I need while I'm at my job. The browser is pulling an "Apple Computers" being aesthetically pleasing, but in reality, in no way different or any more useful than IE7 or Firefox, in all truthfulness, IE7 was probably the best they've done making a browser. I also read somewhere that they made it read websites differently, as if i wasn't frustrated enough having hem look sensible in both IE7 and Firefox, and having to tell people "IE6 won't work, it will not show this the way it is meant to, you should update your computer" and getting the response "It is up to date, it's XP" -_- we all know better don't we MPC.
