Hynix Develops World's First 40nm Class 2Gb GDDR5
Hynix today announced what it claims are the industry's first 2Gb (gigabit) GDDR5 chips using the 40nm manufacturing process. Boasting 7Gb/s of bandwidth and processing power of up to 28GB/s with a 32-bit I/O, these rank as the highest density graphics memory available.
But it's not all about sheer speed. Hynix says its new 2Gb chips also impress on the power consumption front. With an operation voltage of 1.35V, energy consumption drops down by 20 percent over previous parts built on 50nm technology, the company claims.
Hynix will begin mass producing the new chips in the second half of next year to coincide with increased demand for high-performance graphics memory.

The only current problem I see is them being compatible with most processors and motherboards. If they are smart, they'll work something out with AMD or Intel... which I'm sure they are probably doing. This could become a great breakthrough, but if companies feel the need to hold it back to further their profits on current technology, you won't see them for a long time. Sorry, but an unfortunate harsh truth. Let's hope the companies/investors see this as a profit and not a money hole or they won't touch it. We/I can't say for certain since people said that about other tech before, only to be surprised with the release of what they thought was impossible. Only one thing to do gentlemen, sit back to see what happens. lol

Interesting..would FERMI use these memchips, considering ATI has their stuff out already.

On the other hand, these could easily go into a 5890 or something similar...
