HP's Whitman to Decide Future of PC Business this Month
One of the biggest decisions HP's newly appointed CEO Meg Whitman will make is what to do with the company's Personal Systems Group (PSG). Should HP sell or spin-off its PC business, or reverse course set by former CEO Leo Apotheker and concentrate on maintaining its position as the largest PC company in the world? We'll soon find out.
Whitman spoke on the issue yesterday at Fortune's Most Power Women Summit, telling the audience she wants to make a decision "much faster" than Apotheker initially planned, and "certainly by the end of October," according to Reuters.
We're nearly a full week into October, which doesn't leave Whitman and Co. much time to mull things over. It's not a hard deadline, however, and she admitted to Reuters that the October time frame "may slip a little bit." Even so, she insists the decision making process is going much faster than it had under Apotheker.
Under Apotheker's lead, HP announced in August plans to sever its PC arm, either by selling it to the highest bidder or as a spin-off. At the same time, HP scooped up enterprise software firm Autonomy Corp. for $10 billion.
