HP Responds to Laptop Complaints in China
HP came under fire recently when it was reported that several laptops sold in China were faulty. The problem stemmed from overheating videocards, prompting affected consumers to seek out a law firm to help handle the issue. They may not need it.
HP said it is extending the warranties on motherboards in certain laptop models, covering Chinese owners for two years if the mobo was already repaired. The OEM is also offering to test laptops for free, and is currently discussing potential compensation for buyers who already paid postage or repair fees for their motherboards.
"We believe this [plan] will eliminate clients' concerns," HP said in a statement.
But is it enough? Not according to Liu Yongbin, a lawyer at Beijing Yingke Law Firm, which prepared the initial complaint. Youngbin claims that the "warranty extension cannot fundamentally solve this problem," and instead wants HP to recall the affected laptop models.

I recently bought a Touchsmart tablet and have had nothing but grief. The optical drive was malfunctioning and they replaced it with a cheaper model. When I called to tell them that they sent the wrong replacement, they said they had to escalate to a "case manager." The support people are clueless and just recite scripted responses. End of the line for my purchasing of HP products. Whatever happened to customer service? Unfortunately this seems to be spreading to all other companies as well.....

this is a worldwide problem, not just in China. I've experienced this problem before and it's very annoying and I won't ever buy HP again.

*Core 2 Duo E7200

So I used to have a Compaq presario (v6000?) laptop. At the time, the specs were ok:
1.6ghz turion x2
2gb ddr2
80gb hd (small, yes)
14.1 inch widescreen (I specifically wanted something smaller than a 15 inch widescreen)
nvidia 6150go
nvidia nforce something chipsetCompaq as you may know is owned by HP, and this specific laptop had the exact same MB as did one of their more popular HP models.
So 6 months after owning it, the video died, and the laptop wouldn't turn back on (I wasn't gaming on it either). Sent the laptop in to get it fixed. It came back with new ram, and a new motherboard. Same model of motherboard exactly, I checked using linux's lshw command. The interesting thing is, the bios splash screen now had the HP logo, and the bios said HP everywhere it used to say Compaq, so they evidentally didn't have the same part off of their compaq line available, and gave me an HP branded one, with a slightly different bios.
Anyway, 6 months later, JUST outside my waranty was up on the hardware, that motherboard died of the exact same symptoms. I ended up selling the processor, ram, hd, display, and optical drive on ebay and buying a new dell laptop when they refused to fix it again.
I have since helped 3 friends of friends with the same laptop model, or the equivalent HP model recover their data after the laptops suffered the same fate. It seems HP's home/non-business laptops tend to be shoddy sometimes.

HP problems goes further than just China. I'm from latin america and have the exact same problem with mi HP Pavillion TX1330. I wonder if this warranty extends overseas all the way here. Should be. Right now I will never buy anything HP again.

I can see where the clients are coming from. I had a similar issue with Acer/Gateway. I sent the laptop in three times for the same problem (video card overheating) and it came back broken each time. I tried to send it in a fourth time they said it was out of warranty now and they would look at it for $200. Fun stuff I say.
HP gets whats coming to them if they can't stand by their product.
