Do you find yourself utterly unimpressed with Apple's iPad, yet intrigued by the prospect of handheld tablets? Perhaps HP's Slate is everything you hoped the iPad would ultimately be, but isn't. That appears to be the message HP is trying to send with its latest video and blog post showcasing their upcoming tablet.
"Think about the last time you chatted with friends over Skype on your notebook," HP writes. "Or uploaded a picture from your mobile phone to Facebook or Flickr. How about the last time you viewed images or video from an SD card or a USB device. We know that you expect to be able to capture and share digital content on your mobile devices. And the HP slate device excels there."
HP went on to say that they're putting a lot of thought into the Slate's design so that the end product delivers an optimal mobile experience, and from the short 30-second video, it appears they're well on track. Powered by Windows 7 and equipped with a built-in camera, HP's video shows the Slate recording video, taking a conference call in Skype, swallowing a 16GB memory card into its side, and even streaming content to a big screen TV. And Flash? It does that too.
Still no word on price or release date, but we're hoping for 'competitive' and 'soon.'
Could this really be the iPad killer HP is hoping for? Post your impressions in the comments section below.
Oooohhhh shiny! And it's a real computer that can run real applications! And it multitasks, has a camera, webcam, and USB ports! And oh so stylish! Take THAT maxiPad!
If it is ANY less responsive to touch or less accurate than forget it, it won't be an iPad killer, better specs or not. Hardware is what Apple does right, every aspect of it. Look at other smartphones with capacitive touch screens, they just don't have that nice, smooth, responsive feel.
Trying to get it back. Very sorry about that. The OP was making the comment that iPad's aren't very durable, and asked if the iPad requires earbuds or has a speaker. Answer: It has a speaker.
looks very interesting and im excited to try it. battery life is rated at 5 hrs (which means realistically at around 3) so that might be a killer for me. a lot of people are complaining about it running on atom, lots of other people have tested win 7 home premium and up on netbooks with similar specs and it has ran just fine. guess well see. theres an android tablet near release with killer specs (tegra being one of the best feaures)
Does this HP product work like my dell tablet where I have a dell pen and can write my notes and it just converts them to text. Nothing like sitting in a meeting and writting notes down that are clean and spelled correctly.
I want one ASAP. ASAP! I am currently using/testing an iPad for the official Maximum PC review, and I am loving it. No, not because it's from Apple (I could care less if it's from Apple, MS or HP), but because the slate formfactor, paired with multitouch control, is exactly what's useful for a whole bunch of sitautions: kicking back on the couch, going through Lostpedia while watching "Lost," looking up stats while watching an A's game, reading email while watching pretty much anything... and throwing the thing in my backpack for business trips as a backpack is the MOST I want to bring for any trade show stint. My early gripe with the iPad is that as Apple gadget devices become more computer-like (i.e., the iPhone/touch to iPad transition), the more I miss real multitasking. Also, why the iPad pretty much does everything I need for an overnight trip to the track, it can't run my data-aquisition software.
