HP and ASU Show off Flexible Electronic Displays
Posted 12/08/08 at 02:25:52 PM by Andy Salisbury

Nearly four years after Arizona State University decided to open up a flexible display center, they’ve come forward with a prototype.
Their prototype is a flexible display, that is supposedly very easy to manufacture. Thanks to their plastic construction and low power consumption, they’re currently being boasted as extremely e-friendly. The displays are crafted using self-aligned imprint lithography technology, invented by HP.
ASU and HP are hoping to release the technology soon, but they haven’t sent a definite date.

They are not static. It is actually dynamic. If you where to hook it to
a pc, you could use it as a monitor. Watch a youtube video. You can
bend it and whatnot while it plays video just fine. Oled is the
technology used.

That is really going to be a really great thing to have, but I wonder what benefits it will ultimately bring?

Even better, think of being able to go into the middle of nowhere and unrolling a giant screen connected to your laptop. You could hang it on the wall somewhere and watch DVD's like you were in the theater.
Where this will really make a hit though is the convention and advertising market. You could rent a pillar in the middle of the mall, then wrap your ad around it. When you're done, just roll it up and walk away.

What is the resolution of these things? These seem more suited to replace Magazines and Newspapers rather than mobile devices.

Awsome... That is what I remember seeing in the movie Red Planet or was that Mission to Mars? No it was Red Planet.. Yeah... That roll up see through Map display. I hope they hurry and deploy these things to the front lines.
BTW is it a touch screen? It needs to be a touch screen for it to truely be awsome. A roll up touch screen display would really make an excellent product that I would buy no matter what. It would really change the way we use our cell phones. Our PDA's will be different. Perhaps even laptops will change.
This tech just has so many uses. So much to look forward to.
We can build surround displays for Flight sims and FPS games one day if the pixel response ever gets fast enough for that type of use.
I can't wait to see what happens with this. I just hope it's cheap enough to be marketable. I remember when plasma displays were first developed it was claimed that they were cheap to make and therefore would be cheap to purchase. They were rediculously expensive when they first came out and we still don't have any Plasma computer displays. So we'll see what happens. I hope greed takes over so we see lots of products. I just hope the spirit of get rich quick doesn't take over as it did with Plasma displays. Way over priced.

Video is just a prerendered animation, unless they are doing unique things with it even a animated video could be static/pre rendered

that said, if this does hit the market laptops may finally see dedicated full feature GPUS. With paper thin OLED you could use the backplate for just a GPU enclosure.

The lid of the laptop would be this flimsy plastic that works as a touch screen in the closed posistion with it open the display is flimsy but expandable. It just needs to be unfolded or unfurled. Awsome anyone got ideas?
Your laptop has no cover or there is a thin plastic or metal cover that is removable or slidable. The display gets pulled out of the back of the laptop and expanded to whatever size you need to a maximum 32" or something like that...
You can have fun just imagining what can be done with this technology.....
God it's a great time to be alive and a nerd.

you right it does have potential, touch typing, duel touch screen laptops (one for viewing one as a touch keyboad) th only thing i think would be the rube woould be the supporting technology. Sure your screen can be rolled out but what about the GPU, CPU, RAM, HD?
