Hoo-rah! – EA Officially Announces Battlefield 3, Grants Beta Access to Medal of Honor Limited Edition Buyers
Posted 07/31/10 at 04:06:45 AM by Nathan Grayson
Hell, it's about time. Wait, wrong game. Still though, Battlefield 2 came out before Twitter or Facebook hit it big, the iPhone became the tech toy everyone loves to hate but still owns anyway, and even before this snazzy, updated-on-a-regular-basis version of MPC.com came to be. So, for obvious reasons, it feels like we've torn an eternity's worth of pages from our media-centric calendars while waiting to catch a glimpse of DICE's next non-spinoff Battlefield sequel. Fortunately, the finish line's finally in sight.
Via an announcement about Medal of Honor's Limited Edition, EA gave its first official confirmation of Battlefield 3 – and with it, the Battlefield 3 beta. So, how does one nab a spot in the highly anticipated test? Yes – you, in the back. With the shirt that has “Captain Obvious” written all over it. Buy the Medal of Honor Limited Edition, you say? Why yes, you are correct!
Oddly, the Limited Edition will make the same attack on your warchest – $60 – that the standard edition will, and as a result, seems to be the only version listed by many retailers. Aside from the Battlefield 3 beta key, it also packs a little extra heat in the form of a few bonus weapons.
Really though, if a slightly shinier virtual pistol is a deal-breaker for you over Battlefield 3 beta access, you need to take a long, hard look in the mirror, because you do not exist.

Need some clarification/explanation

The only Battlefield game I've played since 1942 is BC2. Can someone explain the difference between the regular Battlefield games and the Bad Company series? Is it just a matter of size, or is the gameplay a distinguishing factor as well (or is it something else entirely)?
Battlefield series had

Battlefield series had planes, tanks, helo's, jeeps, apcs, jetpacks (1942) and others that you could control.
The Bad Company series came out for consoles originally. I guess they figured they could make some more money by changing the name, making the maps smaller, and putting in less vehicles to make the console kiddies happy because they have less buttons to work with. Hence the no prone and no lean that seems to be prevalent in any war FPS recently. In my opinion this moved screwed things up for us PC folks because now we are stuck with dumbed down versions of what could be a really good game.
Somehow I have a very bad feeling that Battlefield 3 is going to suffer the same fate. I hope they prove me wrong.

Is it just me, or have the graphics for the Battlefield franchise not changed since 1942? I know the hardware has gotten better by several fold, but did the game engine itself changed from BF1942 to BF2?
I played BF1942, BF2 and its expansions, and BF2142 and I have to say the models and textures and gameplay in general looks VERY similar between all the games thus far. I hope with all the advances in hardware that DICE has at least revamped the game engine to take advantage. If they haven't, aside from the shiny new guns and maps and vehicles it's just more of the same.
Cross platform and yet

Cross platform and yet another modern combat (I assume) type gameplay. Between those two facts my interest is 30%. If they include dedicated servers and mod capability it'll increase to 60% and I'll definately buy it. No dedicated server I'm passing. I'm sick of these companies ignoring LAN gamers and giving us lackluster game graphics/gameplay/controller options because of consoles being a factor in the development.
Battlefield 2 was a load of crap!

There is no way that I'll be buying this game after how much I felt ripped off by my purchase of BF2. The two things BF2 did right was mind-blowingly amazing weapon sounds, and great destructible environment. Everything else was total garbage: 1) Enemy spawns were within view, so one moment the visible ground in front of you was clear, the next you were getting shot at from a tower you just checked with a sniper rifle. 2) The vehicles control, physics, and damage, were similar to what you'd expect from video games from 5 years ago. 3) One of the biggest offenses of the game in my opinion was that the graphics rendering was piss poor!!! I'd see shadows pop on and off screen constantly, Humvee doors would be missing for seconds then pop in, etc. 4) The AI team mates were useless, the AI enemies paid little attention to them. 5) The level layouts were juvenile... very limited scope, no opportunity for more than one approach, odd places for "walls" blocking your path to where you'd think you'd be able to go.
This game was just incredibly bad. I played it all the way through, hoping there would be some redeeming aspect in the storyline but that was garbage too. I sold the game within a week of buying it, loosing $25, feeling totally ripped off at all the good things I had heard about it that were just lies.
Major oversight

Are you talking about Bad Company 2? BF2 doesn't have destrucible environments or a storyline to be played "all the way through."
beta = the new demo?

I fear this pre-sale/beta gimmick trend is eventually going to be taking the place of free demos... :/
This is a good thing?

So a company wants the consumer to pay in order to quality test a game for them? Oh, gee - sign me up. In my world, companies pay me for my time and work I do for them. Wake up people.

To those serving and those that served, thanks for your service.
They should make it mandatory to serve 6 years minimum in the Military service of your choice, in your country, and once completed you get to use your records to access these military game titles.
As sad as they are in both performance, realism, and the amount of pretend super soldiers they create, only citizens, not civilians should be able to play them. Not that Dice, EA, or anyone else could make a shooter worth a whit that is supposed to resemble "real life" situations in any way. Even Arma is lacking, though it is to complicated for the majority of baby shootists.
Those of us that know the deal will have to sit back and watch patiently until a decent title comes along worth that open wallet. As bad as BC2 is at least it isnt COD.
Those of you buying medal of honor, your going to be disappointed that your buying a big map pack, sad stuff.
