Having Performance Issues in Batman: Arkham City? Stop Using DirectX 11, Publisher Says
If you're suffering performance issues with Batman: Arkham City on the PC, don't worry, you're not alone. Andy Cataldo, U.S. Community Manger for Turbine Inc. (acquired by publisher Warner Brothers in 2010), said that "after researching the matter, we found that running the game with DX11 is causing the performance issues." The solution? Don't run it in DX11 mode, silly.
That's right, the only available solution right now is to run the game with DX9 instead of DX11. That's a tough pill to swallow for such a highly anticipated game, and news of the issue/solution was understandably met with some contempt by Arkham City forum members.
"I'm sorry if I come up as rude, but how in the HELL did this get past beta testing? Pretty much every user is having problems with the performance in DX11 and you guys didn't detect it (you had a month to 'polish the PC release' as well)," one forum member complained.
It is what it is, and Cataldo says an update/fix is in the works. In the meantime, if you're having issues you can find instructions for changing DX11 to DX9 here.

It's kind of ridiculous to release a game and expect everyone to know you're only supposed to run DX9. I don't care if they only wrote it for DX9, but it should be playable for anyone using 10 or 11 without issues.

I don't have this game nor intend to get it right now so my question is just my curiousity... why DX9? What happened to DX10 or 10.1?

This is the problem with developers who develop for the console instead of the PC. You always, ALWAYS develop for the top-end platform and then port to the lesser platforms. The top-end is the PC. Yet another console-to-PC failure.

You develop where the money is! And unfortunately thanks to several factors, including no standard platform, and piracy there is no money developing for PC.

I recently finished building my dream PC (which is already outdated, but that's the way it is with technology) which includes a X58 motherboard with an i7 960 and two Nvidia GTX 560 Ti cards running in SLI. So not the very top, but still very capable.
With Batman: Arkham City I thought I could run it at 1920 x 1080 on my TV with everything turned up. Well, no that got me about 38 fps average and a lot of stuttering in the outdoor environments especially.
Keeping everything else maxed except for Physx (which I left on normal), 3D vision (which I can't use), and antialiasing (Nvidia 8x is plenty), I turned off DirectX 11. Then my average fps jumped up to 78. So I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one with this issue.
I also think they need to work with Nvidia for better SLI scaling. Considering that two 560 Ti cards can beat a single 580 with good SLI support (which makes sense when you think of it in terms of core count), I think I should be getting even better performance in this game.

Great... I get DX11 so I can play the game, only to find out my new rig awesomness can't handle it. When will they stop catering to the consoles of yesteryear and start pushing computing to the limit?
So much for Xmas gifting too! Forget that!

This is the main reason why piracy exists for PC. Buy RAGE, get horrible performance before they get it to run properly. Buy Saints row the third, If you have an ATI card yo wont get past 40 fps (2 6970s in crossfire). Buy Arkham Asylum, get it a month late waiting for developers to polish it and then don't dare trying to take advantage of your gaming rig (for which you spent tons of money) because it will make the game go slower. Worst part is that this seems to be common ground, developers don't owe you more than an apology. This wouldn't bother me at all if I would be getting these games for free. With the kind of service we get, it is amazing there is still some of us that actually keep buying games

Ain't it great to pay 60 bucks or so for the privledge of beta testing (or in some cases apparently alpha-testing) software?

I loved Arkham Asylum, and when Arkham City was delayed for the PC, my dreams of being the cape-crusader on the official day of release (October 18th) were shattered in an instant. PC users have had to wait a little over a month to play the title, and hearing this news is quite disappointing indeed. I haven't noticed the issues myself because I have a DX10 video card compliance - the GTX 285, so for all you poor souls who have a DX11 cards, you have my sympathy. For whatever the real reason Arkham City for the PC was delayed, they could have at least made sure DX11 worked well. Granted, there are quite a few DX11 cards from Nvidia and ATI, but this is just what I see as poorly managed compatibility, if the entire community that has a DX11 card is bitching about these issues happening.

Don't forget new evga cards come with a free copy of the game... they just don't work with it unless you dumb them down on DX.
