Happy Holidays from Team Maximum PC to You!

As I sit here, in the mountains of Northeast Tennessee, surrounded by friends, family, and other loved ones, I just wanted to take a moment and thank you, our loyal readers, for buying our magazine, visiting the website, reading the newsletter, listening to the podcast, and just plain supporting Maximum PC over the years. The magazine is doing OK in a tough market, and the website has grown beyond our wildest expectations this year; and it’s all thanks to you. The rest of the team and I have a lots of fun putting Maximum PC together, but without you guys around to read it, we’d all have to go out and find significantly less awesome jobs. Speaking for all of us: Katherine, Tom, Gordon, Nathan E., Natalie, Boni, Norman, Alex, Paul, Mark, Pulkit, Andy, Justin, Nathan G., Dave, Michael, Benson, Flo, and myself; I want to wish you all the best during the holidays this year, whatever and wherever you celebrate.

We’re going to let our crack news team off for Christmas, so there won’t be any new news posts tomorrow. I’ll dig up some of my favorite posts from the last year and repost them on the front page (if you have story suggestions, post them in the comments). Assuming I don't drink too much egg nog, they should start showing up in the morning.

I also have a sneak peek at a contest I think you’ll be excited about. Around the Maximum PC offices, we get quite a few cool tchotchkes every day. From limited-run T-shirts and bobbleheads to hardware and accessories, it never really slows down. Until now, we’ve either returned or donated to charity anything over $50 in value, and the rest just piled up on our desks. Starting in 2009, we’re going to give it all away to you guys. From USB-powered mini-fridges to gaming mice to netbooks, I’ve been collecting a ton of gear, and I’m giving it all away to people signed up for my Twitter feed. In addition to sometimes terrifying glimpses into the personal life of a Maximum PC editor, I’ll run regular trivia contests and updates on what Maximum PC is up to. To win, all you need to do is sign up for Twitter and follow yours truly.

So, I hope you and your families have a safe and prosperous holiday, followed by a kick ass New Year! Now, I’ve got to get back to making cake and drinking egg nog…

avatarWell Will I'm getting into

Well Will I'm getting into Twitter now (my twitter name is TheWhisman) and I am happy that you made it home safely. I'm sure I speak for most of us MaximumPC magazine and website junkies when I wish you and your staff a very happy new year.

Will do you and any other staff members that may read this post have any new years resolutions?

Mine is to actually use my Preferred membership at Ballys total fitness that I'm paying for each month and try to lose some weight.

avatarHappy Holidays and free stuff = Good Times!

Well Will, I sure hope you haven't sucked down TOO much egg nog...not only will you have a headache, but you'll have the runs to boot! LOL

Just added you to my Twitter follow list...so bring on the free stuff -- Especially all that uber geek junk you get that usually only lives at www.thinkgeek.com !

Love the mag, the podcast, the website, newsfeeds, forum...heck, with very few exceptions, I've enjoyed just about every moment spent with you guys (past and present) since Boot first hit the shelves! (Yeah, I'm THAT old! LOL)

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, All Praise to the Mighty Rantabulations of GM in the new year!

Geek on!

avatarDang it!

Reposting old articles! Man, I'm like two months behind. Now it will be really hard to figure out what I need to read. Also, are you going to keep posting content on the web before you put that same content in the mag? I seem to remember that oil immersed computer appearing on the Internet before I had a hard copy in my hands in the mag. Shouldn't paying subscribers get the content first? Also, do I really have to get twitter to win stuff? Right now I just subscribe to Gordon's RSS Feed.

avatarAs long as we are reflecting...

Since it IS that time of year to reflect I will be thinking about how amazing Will and everyone at MAXPC has been.  As such a long time fan getting the chance to make the podcast has been THE coolest thing ever. It happened so unexpectedly and the editors and listeners were so great, it is hard to believe.  THANKS EVERYONE!!!!

From a devoted reader that goes way back to the BOOT days, thanks to you and past editors for providing a consistent, entertaining, and informative magazine.  With the upgraded website and weekly podcast, things continue to get better each year.  Every month I receive a new mag in the mail, it's like a mini Christmas.

Merry Christmas to you and the staff of Maximum PC!

avatarMerry Christmas and a Happy New Year

I'm sorry, but saying happy holidays is dumb.  If you get offended by me saying Merry Christmas, then I'm sorry, you can not listen and go on your merry way.

Anyways, a buddy of mine introduced me to a little Web Show called "THE GUILD" and if you haven't seen it, you are going to fall off your chair laughing.  This has got to be the best spoof of World of Warcraft I've ever seen.  Make sure you check it out.

I had to share this because if you enjoy the podcast and Gordon's rants, your gonna love this.

avatarMerry Christmas

I generally use the term "Happy Holidays" when I am referring to the entire holiday season, starting on Thanksgiving and ending on New Year's day. I use "Merry Christmas" ect. when I am referring to the individual holidays.

avatarI generally say Happy

I generally say Happy Holidays when I don't know the people I'm talking to or addressing a large group. I say Merry Christmas when I know I'm talking to folks who celebrate Christmas.

And The Guild is awesome. If you like that, check Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. It's got the same girl from The Guild, but also has Neil Patrick Harris and is equally awesome.

Will - thanks for making the effort to expand Maximum PCs reach by improving your very own branded web site. Happy you didn't take the path of a sister mag which shall remain nameless.

avatarAre you referring to CPU

Are you referring to CPU where they give you an article and after reading a quartar of it you are informed that to read the rest of it you gotta pay up while your eyes are diluged with advertisements.

He means PC Gamer. They moved to gamesradar.com/pc. Sorry Horzo.

avatarNothing wrong with

Nothing wrong with Gamesradar.com I never visit the site as it's a jumble. It's not very logically setup. Not like MaximumPC.com

But PCGamer is a gaming magazine and people want game demos and patches and that's what they are good at. And that's when I try gamesradar. So it's not that bad. But I do like the PCgamer podcast. Not as good as the MaxPC Nobs podcast. No cursing.

And I do agree that Will Smith you are the man. The maximupc website is now awsome. Befor you came along the site was a bore to visit. Now it's an important part of my life. I'm addicted to visiting Maximumpc.com and reading the latest news blogs here and making posts like this one.  So thank you Mr. Smith and Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas, Happy Honnakah, and Happy Kwanzaa for my two friends at work that celebrate it each year.:)

Will I just signed up on Twitter and made a post. It's amazing. It's like big brother in reverse. In stead of someone looking over my shoulder I'm telling everyone what I'm doing. Like just the reverse of being private. LOL...

How in the world did twitter get started and who thought it was a good idea? Well I'm not complaining. Perhaps I can help destroy web2.0 with others.

avatarI make mine the dangerous

I make mine the dangerous way, with raw (but fresh) eggs and rum or bourbon.

avatarIt's what's on the surface

It's what's on the surface of the shell that make eggs dangerous. What's inside is safe to eat raw. I reacon if you carefully wash the eggs with anti bacterial soap and water you will face no danger in making eggnog with raw eggs.

avatarFor the most part that's

For the most part that's true.  However, Salmonella, being the tricky thing it is, has gotten into the ovaries of batches of the chickens and gets inside the egg before the shell's created.

avatarI stand corrected. I was

I stand corrected. I was under the impression salmonella was on the surface of the shell. That really sucks.

Well how do the french get around it then? Alot of dishes require raw eggs. Look at the mayonaise that you put on your sandwitch. It's got raw eggs in it. Souflette or however it's spelled is another that's got raw egg in it. Lots of tasty dishes like eggnog require raw egg.

This really sucks. Oh well I'll just take my chances and keep eating anyway. It's not like we have a choice it's either eat or die.

But you can get and make all the eggnog and mayo with pasteurized eggs with no chance of samonella.

avatarI think for the most part

I think for the most part that the internal salmonella's only in relatively small batches of chickens (with the majority being external to the shell).   They apparently have the same salmonella outbreaks that we do, so I imagine they just get sick more often from it and you just don't hear about it...

avatarFrom what I understand,

From what I understand, you're also safer if you use fresher eggs. The older the eggs get, the longer the salmonella has to spread. I am not a chef, but that's what I've always read in magazines and seen on TV.
