Group of "Laptop Hunters" Prove You CAN Get a Mac for Cheap
Posted 09/04/09 at 07:00:26 AM by Paul Lilly
Microsoft's "Laptop Hunters" ads try to drive the point home that PCs (as in, Windows-based) are a better value than pricey Macs, but all that goes out the window if you can pick up a Mac for free. Of course, there's a caveat. In order to cash in on the five-fingered discount, you have to be morally inept, willing to break and enter an Apple Store, and not be phased by the prospect of jail time.
A surveillance camera picked up just such a situation in an Apple Store in Marlton, NJ. Five thieves broke into the location with a brick and quickly went to business making off with 23 MacBook Pros, 14 iPhones, and 9 iPods in just 31 seconds, escaping before the security guard rushed in.
Catch the video here, and don't try this at home, or anywhere else.

Imagine them trying to break

Imagine them trying to break into the glass cube that is one of the New York locations. Throw a brick, the entire store (above ground) breaks.

Five Finger Discount - The ultimate discount of them all!
... seriously having a guard is helpul, but they needed additional security layers to slow down the thief (e.g.. needed laptop locks to table)
Put dispenser here!

Or maybe they should try using security cages like all normal businesses do. Heck, even dollar stores use them!

Don't the demo MacBook pros not work outside of the store?

But still, 23 seconds is pretty damn impressive. I bet they are a vigilante group headed up by Steve Ballmer.
Money

Before the big memory price crash in mid-1996, memory had maintained a fairly
consistent price for many years of about $40 per megabyte. A typical
configuration back then of 16MB cost more than $600. In fact, memory was so
expensive at that time that it was worth more than its weight in gold. These
high prices caught the attention of criminals and memory module manufacturers
were robbed at gunpoint in several large heists. This is what mac reminds me of I hate macs alot, you want mac install Ubuntu o I almost for got Ubuntu is FREE! FREE! FREE!
Locked down?
Submitted by optionboy16 on Fri, 09/04/2009 - 2:09pm
Some Apple stores in upscale areas aren't locked down. I know in my town, they aren't. It's not as big, but you could do the same thing. These kids knew what they were doing. I watched on the History channel how a bank robber threw a brick at a bank window and timed the police response. They used that information to time there robbery later. It wouldn't be hard, but you'd have to have some balls.
Don't worry...

Apple can pay for it with the money they have stolen from customers!
Those glass points are too sophisticated for normal hood people.

Only imperial stormtroopers are so precise.

the news guy almost sounded like he is cheering for the thief like some kind of sport.
Apple had it coming to them

Apple had it coming to them ever since they started price gouging the public.
I hope these guys never get caught.
The convenient magnetic

The convenient magnetic powercords and sleek design of the macbooks make them easier to steal.
Good thing Macs are so

Good thing Macs are so innovative and have 'trip proof' power cords for easy stealing! No hassling trying to figure out how to un plug the laptop when it can simply be ripped from the wall without damage!
LOL That is a very good

Now that is a good headline for the article!
I actually lol'd.
I wonder what that security guard would have done. Somehow I have a feeling he was in on it.
I think he might have been

I think he might have been in on it too. One thing is why were these computers or ipods not locked down? I have been to an Apple store before and everything was locked down.
Could be their new

saw this on ebaums....its pretty hillarious. wonder if they plan on hitting other stores besides apple. seems there was definitely some planning
It costs 400,000 dollars to fire this weapon...
Submitted by Havok on Fri, 09/04/2009 - 5:16am
If say, all the Mac book pros were the small 13 inch unit at 1,339 (which they probably weren't) and the ipods were all 8 gb( once again, they probably all weren't 8), the total value stolen would have been AT LEAST $41,508. Apple certainly got boned on this one.

Well, that might be what
Submitted by vistageek on Fri, 09/04/2009 - 5:48am
Well, that might be what they were asking for them, but that is not what they were worth. I wouldn't pay that much for one. ;-)
Straight from 'the source'
Submitted by Havok on Fri, 09/04/2009 - 8:06am
I got those prices from apple's very own website. Apparently, if it is white, or silver, and has a bitten apple on it, it's worth ten times as much

Just think
Submitted by mesiah on Fri, 09/04/2009 - 8:30pm
Just think how much those things would cost if they had a whole apple on them!
Well . . .
Submitted by webhead on Fri, 09/04/2009 - 10:07am
That depends on what you mean by "worth", just makes me curious if when they add up the total loss do they include the "apple tax"?
BOOSH!
