Green Day: Rock Band Gets a Release Date
MTV and Harmonix on Thursday finally committed to a release date for the upcoming "Green Day: Rock Band" standalone music videogame. It will launch worldwide on June 8, 2010 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii game consoles.
"Green Day's music and explosive live performances transcend age barriers," said Tom Whalley, Chairman, Warner Bros. Records. "By partnering the band with Harmonix, Warner Bros./Reprise is thrilled to help create a Rock Band experience devoted exclusively to their impressive catalog."
Harmonix promises players will have access to a setlist of 47 tracks, including "Brain Stew," "Jaded," "Hitchin' a Ride," "American Idio," "Wake Me Up When September Ends," and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams." All the tracks will be exportable and playable in previous versions of Rock Band.
In addition to the 47 songs, gamers can also unlock more than 100 collectible images and over 40 minutes of unreleased video from interviews, outtakes, and performances, Harmonix says.

I find the people that "play in a band" (that normally never sell even two dozen records) tend to be the hardest musical elitists to please. If you can name your 10 favourite bands they can recall how each has "sold out", "copied someone's sound", or plain "bored them".
I sometimes honestly think it is out of hurt egos that their uber-skill was never appreciated as they believe it should have been. Which is ironic because things that are cited (such as boring 4-4 timing) as the overly simplistic style of a popular band are completely lost on the average dude. We don't listen to music for some sort of innovation or technical prowess. Yes when it is there we exalt, but if it isn't but the music still sounds good and we respond to it, then we like it.
It's like art or poetry - just because you are technically talented, innovative, and pushing the boundaries doesn't mean anyone outside your clique wants to hear it, see it, or read it. Or buy it as an add-on for a game where we play fake music with plastic buttons!!!!
If you really want to play your favourite obscure bands in this game convince them to post on RBN and have your fun. Maybe some of us dudes out here will learn to appreciate the technical talent you so laud.

Now aside from the band they picked what is really interesting is that this is the first GH:Metallica-style game from Harmonix. (GH:Metallica I have long considered the best band-dedicated music game release that was not a full-blown, over-the-top production like RB:Beatles was - RB:Beatles-level effort can't be expected for other bands.) It will be more involved than the AC/DC Track Pack and closer to the Beatles and Metallica extras, yet completely exportable. Which in my estimation puts it at a comparable product to the GH:Metallica one but is exportable and thus, better. Another product format win for Harmonix and Rock Band it looks like.

Why did they pick Greenday?? Why?? Shadowsfall or Killswitch Engage would have been a much better pick in my opinion.

Those two bands have more musical talent in thier pinky than greenday has ever had. Greenday is a sorry excuse for a "rock band" as they are more or less, shall I say, contemporary rock with horrible, stupid lyrics that shouldn't even be considered being played on any radio station other than top 40 bubble hits.

It is purely because green day has crossed all genre barriers. If they made a killswitched engaged game then all of three people would buy it.
Its kinda like "Make a game about Lady Gaga or Cher?"

Yeah but in my opinion, GD has like 2 good songs. Plus how can GD make a good GH game when they are basic 4-4 timing and most of thier songs last maybe 3 minutes long. I get bored listening to them.

They're from California. The only way to be more American is to be from Texas. You can't fault them for success.

I loved them until they made that hit American Idiot. They aren't being self deprecating as they aren't americans. I'm just so patriotic it was just a big turn off. The one look at the lyrics was enough to secure my feelings on the subject of Green Day and to think I loved Dookie so much.

I'm not saying it was a good song but. . .

American Idiot is a song that basically says that they aren't going to be one of these brain washed idiots that live in this country. You know the type, they think that Lady Gaga being a man is so important! Also, they say that they aren't going to let the press lie to them, and that they are going to pay attention to world events. Example: Why is it that Barack Obama won the election? Why was John McCain even his opponent? I mean seriously, it cant be that they were the best men for the job?

Wow, you must be a greenday fan or something. I have played the drums for 25 years and have played in many bands ranging from rock to thrash metal, and the only music I enjoyed playing was hardcore. Why? Because it's not boring to play and I/we would never have sold out like GD has just to appease 11 year old girls.

I feel the EXACT same way. Why did they have to turn in to such a trash band.
I used to listen to Nimrod, Dookie and the like all the time. Now when I hear Green Day I think, "14 year old girl, political trash music".

Do you think it is wrong for a band to grow musically? I mean, should they make the same song and album every year? It is the same thing as a person liking different music and changing genres, because most people wont listen to the same artist and genre their whole life.

Grow musically?
Is that a joke?
The music is the exact same, they just changed the lyrics. They still play a few power chords, and all the damn songs still follow the same damn progression. Period.
Green Day used to be able to make this formula work. Now that they have trash lyrics, it doesn't work.
