I thought apple invented that?
Or at least they will.

How naive. Apple invents nothing. They're just incredibly good at executing and marketing products that have already been predicted and created by real innovators.

The most innovative thing about this is how it will be able to reduce manufacturing costs through a more efficient assembly process. However, that long term decrease will have little to no short term impact, since current assembly uses precut sheets (kind of like old school printing presses), with feed systems built around that supply model.

Since the only improvement is going to be in efficiency, the material cost (cost of a 'roll' of willow glass) will have a distinct impact on the timeframe of implementation, and ROI on upgrade costs. ie. if 'willow glass' is substantially more expensive, manufacturers won't pay to upgrade their assembly since supply cost would negate any efficiency gains (decrease in assembly costs).

I'd argue that Corning is best known for its PYREX cooking glassware that has been around for about 100 years.
