Google Thought Michael Jackson Traffic was an Attack
Posted 06/28/09 at 03:28:41 PM by Justin Kerr
Google has confirmed that the error messages people received on Thursday when searching for details of Michael Jackson’s death, was initially perceived as an attack. Searches between 2:45 and 3:15pm were returned with "We're sorry, but your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now."
The error messages lasted for about 25 minutes on Thursday, just long enough for Google to confirm what was actually going on. The search giant noted that the amount of traffic it saw on this topic was unprecedented, as millions around the world scrambled for accurate information, seemingly all at once. Yahoo has also confirmed that it hit an all-time record for unique visitors with over 16.4 million following the story. This blows away the previous record held by the Obama election day, with a paltry 15.1 million uniques.
The outpouring of sympathy online has been astonishing, and I’m sure Google will learn its lesson on this one.

What about Billy Mays? I think this might trump Michael Jackson eventually.

Can't blame them for watching their own ass. The fallout from a virus attack that propagated itself through their servers would be 1000x worse than 16.4 million people experiencing a slight and temporary inconvenience.

MJ was nothing more than a freak. A black man straight to a white woman and a alleged child molester (although found not guilty) but addmittedly let children sleep in his bed and had one on one pj parties. He was morally and ethically wrong. I'm not speaking of his laegacy as a good entertainer, that's not in question but his morality of a human being is. He is by no means an ICON or any of the sort because after all, he is just a man, a person, an immoral human. LET IT GO people!!!
Thumbs up.

I'm no fan of Michael

I'm no fan of Michael Jackson's work, but I do have sympathy for the man for what was going on with him. Eh, Michael was just abused a lot as a child by his parents and I think that ended up playing a major role later on in his life for the things he did. He probably also cracked under a lot of pressure of being an iconic star. Was it wrong for what he did, yes. Do I try and understand the reasoning behind his bad decisions? Yes.
He is kinda lame

I dunno from what i've read he had a Peter Pan complex "I don't wanna grow up" and on some level thought he still was a kid. So i think he's not a evil ans some people belive. Fucked up.
Oh hell yeah.
But he's no George W. Bush evil.
Hell i half wonder if he really is dead or if this was the final step before she becomes Michelle Jacks and fads away into suburbia. I mean the only thing that makes sense to me to explain while a chubby black boy would grow up into a anorexic white woman was if some part of his brain though that was the only way to "escape" and be "normal"

You can't let up on security. Once they had verification, they allowed the requests through, sounds like a perfect response to me.
