Google Testing VoIP Service Integrated with Gmail
We've been wondering what Google would do with VoIP service Gizmo5 since their recent acquisition. Now we're getting the first hints of the plan. Google is apparently testing a new VoIP service that will be built into Gmail. The service is expected to allow calls to be placed from a user's Google Voice number. Could this also mean Google Voice is about to open up?
The Gmail interface will gain a new button that will bring up a phone keypad with access to contacts and a credit balance. Before now, if you wanted to make a call using Google Voice you needed a phone to route the call over a voice network. This will also allow users to initiate calls on their Google Voice connected phones.
In addition to the Gmail integration, a desktop app is also in the works. All this is still not open to the public, and Google has been tightlipped about it so far. We find this pretty exciting, you?

Sooner or later, I honestly think landline phones will be a thing of the past! Not like we can't already watch funny videos on our cell phones already.

VoIP for iPhone. With a choice of softphones available now for iphone, there’s literally no limit to the number of calls that can be made for free or at a massively reduced rate.

It sure comes as a bit surprising news keeping in view that Google has been working extensively to compete with and outgrow the VOIP providers but it sure is good news for the Gmail users. Alex Chitu from Google OS blogged that Google are in the process of testing Full-on voice integration with Gmail. There are certain subtle changes in the UI and P90X. Soon, it is believed, we will be able to make Google voice calls right from within the mail box. A new phone icon appears loaded with a dialpad and contact list. It also shows credit balance and a call button.

CNET has learned that Google is testing a Web-based service within Gmail that will allow users to place phone calls from their in-boxes. It's launched from the Google Chat window on the lower left-hand side of a Gmail page and allows users to place and receive calls from within their contacts through a user interface that strongly resembles the one used in Google Voice. Bose V35 Google has been edging in this direction for some time. Google Talk was released years ago as a VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) desktop client, and it has also spent a lot of time and money evangelizing Google Voice, a service that transcribes voice mails and allows users to have one phone number that rings multiple phones.

We tested the Google Talk VoIP capabilities on a Windows desktop, a Windows laptop, and a Mac laptop. You'll see the "Call phone" button in the Google Talk sidebar just under your name and status bar. In some cases, clicking to activate Google Talk's VoIP service will prompt you to install the Google Talk voice and video plugin before you can begin dialing. The plugin is requisite, but you may have already done so to try out video calls, an existing feature unlike iphone. It may go without saying, but we'll say it anyway--you will need to have a microphone handy, either in the computer itself, or in a headset, in order to hear your caller from your computer.

I'm a big user of Gmail chat. Being able to switch from email to chat as needed, all within the same app, is really great for productivity. But people can only type so fast, and even with our new emoticons, there are still some things that just can't be expressed in a chat message. That's why today we're launching voice and video chat -- right inside Gmail at webdesign stuttgart. We've tried to make this an easy-to-use, seamless experience, with high-quality audio and video -- all for free. All you have to do is download and install the voice and video plugin and we take care of the rest. And in the spirit of open communications, we designed this feature using Internet standards such as XMPP, RTP, and H.264, which means that third-party applications and networks can choose to interoperate with Gmail voice and video chat.

For those users seeing the test of the new product, the ability to make phone calls is added directly to the Google Talk popup that appears in the lower right corner of the Gmail screen, offering a keypad, a call history, and a credit balance. According to the screenshots from CNET, Google will offer free calls within the U.S. and Canada, with cheap international calling, in 2010 code promotion. Gadget-obsessed blog Slashgear suggests that the new feature fits in line with rumors from last July, which suggested that Google was looking to develop a software-based VoIP service that would fit in line with its upcoming Google Chrome OS.

It all depends upon how well it works and how much it costs. Skype used to be the only game in town, but I gotta say it's been heading downhill for awhile now. Maybe with a little competition things will heat up a bit.

If you have a tablet that can connect to Gmail with WiFi, or some form of 3g/4g. Is it then worth paying the bill for a smart phone? Obviously there are some serious trade offs for convince. You can't just put a tablet up to your ear and start jabberin' away.
With the average smart phone starting at about $200 USD, and basic plans for that phone in the $70/$80 range. It can be hard to swallow that kind of bill.
Still, using Gmail for in game speak could be pretty useful.
