Google Search Results Get a New Look
Google has finally begun widespread rollout of their new search results page after a testing period. Google has added a number of useful options to a new left hand column. The column is separated into three sections: Universal Search, the Search Options panel and Something Different.
Universal search is at the top and helps users refine their searches by suggesting search "genres". The "Everything" option is selected as the default and provides the classic Google results. It can be used to narrow results to categories like "News" or "Blogs". Below that is the search options panel which was rolled out last year, so you're probably already familiar with it. It is mainly used to change how the search results are displayed
The bottom block in the new column is called Something Different. It is based on a labs project called Google Squared. This section is designed to help users compare search results. Based on search context, this area will provide similar searches. Now this is integrated right into the search results page.
According to Google, the new page will be rolling out to all users by the end of the day. Do you have the new look yet? If so, what do you think?

From the Google Corporate Info Page (http://www.google.com/corporate/ux.html):
Above all, a well-designed Google product is useful in daily life. It doesn't try to impress users with its whizbang technology or visual style [...] It doesn't strong-arm people to use features they don't want.

The new layout is copying the worst of the other search engines. The majority of the comments in Google's own forums are against it:

My God, I hate this. The search box doesn't even work right in my Firefox. They could at least give us a choice before changing things this majorly. Seriously. One of the computers at my school was one of those selected for random testing, and upon searching in science class one day, I nearly screamed.

The only thing hat was preventing me from leaving google for good for anything else was their simplicity of search results. It's got a little thing on the top to switch through things andthat was about it. And to be honest google's just trying to be bing, the same as facebook's trying to be Facebook+Twitter now when at the original version of itself it was trying to be Facebook+Myspace, they're all just trying to be like everyone else and lose any aspect that made them unique. The new layout on youtube a while back i stopped going there completely. I refuse to go to that damned new layout it's rather stupid and anti-intuitive.
Google's doing the same thing with all of their products. Next up? Gmail will look like it was designed by Microsoft just all of you wait...

this is pretty old, I was assigned this UI when they were doing it randomly. I hate it, I hope it flops. I use google because it's google(simple), and because it's not bing(cluttered).

Id rather be stabbed with the round end of a spoon than to like the new look. For some reason the ubuntu version doesnt have the side crap, so i use that until i cave in and accept googles new look.
